Job Summary
The Communications & Public Relations Specialist plays a key role in shaping and sharing the story of Frederick Health. This position is responsible for developing strategic content, executing communication plans, and supporting public relations efforts that elevate the organization’s visibility, reputation, and connection with the community. Under the guidance of the Director of Marketing & Communications, this team member collaborates with stakeholders across departments—including senior leadership—to produce compelling internal and external communications. The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller, experienced writer, and proactive communicator who can adapt messages for diverse audiences in a dynamic healthcare environment.
Supports, and is responsible for incorporating into job performance, the Frederick Health (FH) mission, vision, core values and customer service philosophy and adheres to the FH Compliance Program, including following all regulatory requirements and the FH Standards of Behavior.

Physical Demands
Sedentary - Light Work - Lifting up to 15 pounds on an infrequent basis (less than one lift every three minutes). While work is mostly done sitting, a certain amount of walking or standing is often necessary.

Pay is based on experience, skills and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on specialty if applicable. Non-Exempt positions may have shift differential and/or Overtime paid, if applicable.
Salary Range: $56,576.00 - $85,737.60

Example Of Essential Functions
- Develop, write, and edit content for press releases, newsletters, internal communications, the public website, and marketing materials.
- Translate complex healthcare and clinical information into accessible messaging for patients, staff, and the broader community.
- Draft and implement internal and external communications plans for topics such as announcements, events, operational updates, safety alerts, and seasonal health issues.
- Collaborate with leadership to produce sensitive communications, such as reports, talking points, and executive messages, maintaining confidentiality and HIPAA compliance.
- Coordinate public relations efforts to position Frederick Health as a trusted leader in healthcare and community engagement.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with media partners; respond to inquiries, schedule interviews, and coach subject matter experts.
- Pitch stories, prepare press releases, and seek proactive media opportunities that align with organizational priorities.
- Oversee development of an annual PR plan in collaboration with the Director and external resources.
- Lead or support internal communication campaigns that reinforce organizational culture, values, and employee awareness of strategic initiatives.
- Attend internal committees and external meetings (e.g., Communication Committee, County PIO) to ensure consistent messaging and brand alignment.
- Circulate key updates and ensure timely communication flow between teams and leadership.
- Plan and support event communications, including coordination with elected officials and community leaders.
- Manage event logistics and communications deliverables in collaboration with internal stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain an editorial calendar; conduct quarterly reviews with leadership to ensure alignment with strategic marketing goals.
- Ensure consistency in tone, style, and voice across all communication platforms in accordance with the Frederick Health brand.
- Partner with team members (Digital Specialist, Designer, etc.) to deliver high-quality materials for various audiences and platforms.
- Collaborate with service lines and departments to promote key programs and initiatives.
- Research award and sponsorship opportunities and present quarterly recommendations for approval.
- Coordinate and promote provider highlights and meet-and-greet events, ensuring alignment with marketing campaigns.
- Act as a liaison and resource across departments and with senior leadership to support communication goals and initiatives.
- Skilled in tailoring messaging for both internal and external audiences.
- Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and experience handling confidential information with discretion and integrity.
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Effective collaborator with a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset and strong relationship-building skills.
- Experience in media relations, media planning, and crisis communication preferred.
- Knowledge of AP Style and adherence to brand voice and style guidelines.
- Dedicated to supporting Frederick Health’s mission and enhancing its public image.
- Strong editorial judgment, with excellent proofreading and copyediting skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in public relations or marketing communications, preferably in a healthcare or nonprofit setting.
- Proven ability to write and edit clear, engaging content—especially related to healthcare topics and clinical services—for diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated experience conducting interviews and transforming complex information into compelling stories
