Breaking News Reporter

The Idaho Statesman seeks a fast-acting breaking news reporter to join its award-winning newsroom in Boise, one of the fastest-growing metro areas in America.

This reporter will join our prolific breaking news team that has provided market-leading coverage of Boise’s hangar collapse, a hospital prison break, a run of police shootings and Ammon Bundy’s fight against local authorities. We’re looking for a reporter who can move quickly when news breaks, dig for details and follow the biggest stories with coverage that sets us apart.

This position covers our Tuesday-Saturday breaking news shifts.

Join the newsroom that explained why the government isn’t helping employees with unpaid wage claims against employers, explored the past of the man accused of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from the Idaho American Legion, and produced an in-depth look at the ramifications of the reopening of a Central Idaho mine. What You’ll Bring

The successful candidate should meet many, though not necessarily all, of the following requirements:

• College degree or equivalent work experience.
• 1-3 years of reporting experience.
• Must have reliable transportation. Must have valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance (at least minimum insurance required for the state in which the employee works).
• Strong writing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.
• Commitment to ethics.
• Ability to build source networks and bring a flow of story ideas.
• Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories.
• Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.
