Vertex Company is seeking a multi-disciplined Sensor Engineer to support the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s Perimeter Intrusion and Detection System (PIDS) deployed at the metro NY airports. The PIDS Sensor Engineer works as part of a New York/New Jersey based System Engineering and Maintenance team that designs, builds, integrates, tests, maintains, and supports this 24 * 7 operational surveillance system.
This position will interface with many areas of the operational system including computing infrastructure, networks and command and control applications. The selected candidate should be self-starting and inquisitive with good written and verbal communication skills and thrive in the challenges of working in an operational environment.

Job Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
- Provide sensor expertise in the use and selection of sensor upgrades to support the expansion or modernization of the existing system.
- Assess and recommend enhancements to the existing system.
- Design and integration of new Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) products into the existing system
- Developing new security system products for specialized applications.
- Assist the maintenance team in troubleshooting issues with equipment failures in the field.
- Ability to prioritize and multitask.
- Provide maintenance support of the primary and secondary subsystems.
- Provide support to technicians and engineering team with system maintenance activities.
- Monitor availability and performance of assigned subsystems.
- Provide engineering support for new projects and design changes.
- Perform integration and test of new sensors.
- Conduct customer capability selloff and report preparation of changes.
- Lead or support projects including technology refresh.
- Maintain configuration management of assigned subsystems (configuration, design, work instructions, data, etc.)
- Support site leads with incident analysis and engineering investigations / bench tests.
- Develop and maintain engineering work instructions and process improvements and maintain updates to hotline guides.
- Provide training to technicians and other engineering team members.
- Support FRACAS investigations.
- Research current and new technologies in the assigned subsystem to help improve the system.
- Participate in a rotation of 24*7 on-call hotline support as Level 2 or Level 3 reach-back.
Required Skills
Hands on experience with, and a working knowledge of the following areas:
- A minimum of 3 years professional experience working with multi sensor security systems, including 2 year supporting fielded systems.
- Familiarity security cameras, motion detection sensors, IR and EO devices.
- Experience with Windows/Microsoft products including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- This individual must have the ability to prioritize and multitask.
- System troubleshooting; (COTS hardware, networking equipment, logistics tools)
- General test equipment knowledge (volt meter, power supplies, inclinometers, GSP devices, etc.)
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to obtain a Secure Worker Access Consortium (SWAC) clearance and SIDA badging at individual airports.
- Valid Drivers license and safe driving skills.
The ideal candidate will also have:
- Knowledge of security alarm systems, components, and various CCTV systems
- Knowledge of other logistics management systems and software.
- Resourcefulness...the team works at off-site locations away from the home office where initiative and problem solving are paramount.
- A two-year technical or logistics degree, an accredited apprenticeship program or the equivalent in a technical or logistics field.
