Located in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley, the El Monte Union High School District was established in 1901. Its high schools include Arroyo, El Monte, Mountain View, Rosemead, South El Monte and Fernando R. Ledesma High School. EMUHSD also features the El Monte-Rosemead Adult School, one of California's largest and most respected adult programs. EMUHSD employs over 600 certificated employees and over 500 classified employees. The professional staff provides educational programs for over 7,000 students in grades 9 through 12 and 11,000 in adult education. Just minutes from the hub of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Civic Center, with the Pomona, San Bernardino and 605 freeways traversing the areas, the district boasts many comfortable and residential neighborhoods in addition to providing sites for a myriad of business and industrial facilities. The population studies show that approximately 200,000 people reside in our attendance boundaries. The area that the District serves represents a cross-section on interests, professions, and groups. BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, operate a private branch exchange switchboard at a school site or District Office; perform receptionist, clerical and mail distribution duties; provide routine information to the public; greet and direct visitors to appropriate locations. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: Operate branch exchange switchboard at a school site or District Office; receive incoming calls and make necessary connection to appropriate personnel or department. E Receive calls from certificated personnel and secure substitutes; maintain list of substitutes available for work; contact substitute teachers for appropriate subjects; perform related clerical work according to established procedures. E Receive and sort newspapers, magazines, District and U.S. mail; distribute to appropriate school or personnel mail box; prepare mail slip for oversized items; stuff, seal and label outgoing mail and parcels; weigh and apply proper postage according to established procedures. E Greet and direct visitors to appropriate locations; greet substitute teachers and issue keys. E Perform a variety of clerical work as assigned, such as posting and maintaining office and student records, typing and duplicating materials; type and address envelopes; file and type routine lists, records, reports and correspondence. E Assure the switchboard is covered during working hours; train and provide work direction to assigned student workers. E Operate switchboard and a variety of office equipment such as a typewriter, computer, copier, facsimile and other related equipment. E Arrange for substitute for certificated teachers as assigned; maintain records associated with the substitute program. Operate and maintain office photocopy equipment; make copies for teachers, departments of District personnel; maintain record of number of copies made; add toner and perform routine maintenance to photocopy equipment as necessary. Input detention information into computer, maintain records of detentions served and outstanding for review by the attendance or counseling office personnel as assigned. Assist personnel to respond to emergency situations according to established procedures. Perform related duties as assigned. OVER RECEPTIONIST (Cont.) Page 2 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Operation of private branch exchange switchboard. Proper telephone etiquette and techniques. Modern office practices, procedures and equipment. Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary. Oral and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Postage regulations. Basic computer operation. ABILITY TO: Operate a private branch exchange switchboard at school site or District Office. Perform a variety of routine clerical, receptionist and mail distribution duties. Provide information in a clean and understandable manner. Work independently with constant interruptions. Receive the publics tactfully and courteously. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Train and provide work direction to others. Maintain records as directed. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Operate office equipment including typewriter, copier and postage machine. Type at a net corrected speed of 45 wpm. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and one year of general clerical experience, including typing, public contact and the operation of the branch exchange switchboard. LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Some positions in this class may be required to work non-standard working hours. WORKING CONDITIONS: Office environment subject to constant interruptions. Position requires hearing, light lifting, under 15 pounds and bending. EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Bargaining Unit Position.

Graduation from high school or equivalent and one year of general clerical experience, including typing, public contact and the operation of the switchboard. Must type at a net corrected speed of 35 WPM on a 5-minute test.
