A fully funded PhD position is available at the Ontario Veterinary College, Department of Population Medicine, University of Guelph. The successful candidate will join a research project titled “Evaluating Free-Farrowing Systems – Impacts on Sow and Piglet Welfare, Mortality, and Productivity,” under the supervision of Dr. Terri O’Sullivan and Dr. Anne Deckert. The project will focus on on-farm trials, video-based behavioral assessments, and performance data analysis to improve swine welfare in low-confinement systems. Eligibility Requirements

  • Master’s degree (MSc or equivalent) in epidemiology, animal science, veterinary medicine, or related fields
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Interest in animal welfare and swine production systems
  • Willingness to conduct on-farm research and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
  • Experience with behavioral observation, statistical analysis, or swine management is an asset, but not required

  • Data collection at the Ontario Swine Research Centre
  • Behavioral scoring and welfare assessments
  • Performance and mortality data analysis
  • Publishing scientific articles and participating in knowledge mobilization
