JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

What began as a one-man environmental engineering consulting firm in 1986 has purposefully grown into a leading design services firm. Watts is a multi-disciplinary architecture and engineering (A/E) firm providing architecture, civil, environmental, transportation, and construction monitoring services with offices in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and New York City. As an interdisciplinary team of architects, engineers, and community builders, we work hand in hand with our clients to realize enduring designs - to create space for what matters.

We have an immediate opening for a full-time Environmental Scientist in our Buffalo office. Clients will include various state agencies (NYSDOT, SUCF, DASNY, NYSDEC, OGS, NYCDEP), local governments, and authorities (NYPA, PANYNJ, etc.) across New York but with an upstate New York focus. Individual projects may include bridge, trail, highway, aviation, building, planning, and institutional redevelopment and expansion projects.

Responsibilities And Duties

Responsible for the completion of environmental assessment and design tasks. Work will include Phase I environmental site assessments, Phase II field investigations (oversight of drilling rigs, soil, and groundwater sampling, monitoring well installation), and environmental inspection and oversight of remedial cleanup work. Work will also require the development of specifications, drawings, and preliminary cost estimates in support of these projects. As part of an engineering firm, many of the projects will include a design component and the development of specifications and associated design drawings. Employee must be equally comfortable in the field and preparing reports.

  • Perform fieldwork, documentation, and research as requested
  • Assisting with or preparing design documents
  • Familiar with NYSDEC and USEPA environmental regulations
  • Maintain client relations
  • Work may extend to the completion and management of multiple tasks in support of NEPA/SEQRA reports, environmental field surveys, ecological/habitat investigations, and regulated building materials project monitoring/air sampling, surveys and design
  • Additional tasks may include the completion of building inventories and sampling methodologies for proposed renovation or demolition projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1-3 years of professional experience
  • HAZWOPER, OSHA 10, Confined Space, USDOT Transporter, Asbestos, Lead, etc., strongly preferred
  • Possess a clean driving record
  • Experience with AutoCad/GIS a plus but not required
  • Ability to travel within New York regionally (10-20%)

Compensation

  • $45,000 to $52,000 depending on experience, education and certifications/training
