Position Summary

Within a consultant business setting, the Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting a client within the Industrial Construction Industry. Reporting to eh HSE Operations Managing Principal, this position is accountable for a number of responsibilities ranging from overseeing a construction project from a health & safety perspective, to managing all OHS requirements within the assigned facility ensuring compliance as a lead on the client’s site.

Some Key Responsibilities

  • Provides expertise and advice to client/personnel on health, safety and environmental issues while auditing project specific safety plans and reviewing health and safety program documents for construction or industrial project;
  • Acts as a key advisor to client project team and assists with risk and hazard identification and control processes;
  • Prepares H&S performance reports, daily activity reports and timesheets;
  • Prepares site tour observation reports, identifying conditions requiring corrective action and communication
  • Conducts regular walkabouts with the focus on high-risk operations and conditions
  • Reviews or assists with verifying trade safety records/certifications, safety board, site signage requirements and presence of H&S documentation & permits onsite for compliance;
  • Manage or provide subject matter expertise regarding H&S committee meetings;
  • Conducts site orientations and safety talks, or training;
  • Assists with on-site incidents, accidents, investigations and H&S requirements;
  • Liaison with regulatory agency officials in the course of onsite visits for any H&S occurrences;
  • Managing all sub-consultant/sub-contractor or trades on site from an OHSA perspective ensuring preventative measures are communicated;
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Certificate or Diploma in Occupational health & safety or a trade certification with equivalent experience;
  • Minimum 4 years experience onsite Health & Safety Management Experience within construction;
  • NSCO, GSC-CSC, CRSP, CHST or other designation preferred;
  • Proficient with computer applications, tablets and the Microsoft suite of products;
  • Strong working knowledge of the Ontario OHSA and Regulations and Regulations for Construction projects
  • Field level safety audit and inspection experience
  • Excellent at managing expectations, shows initiative and can multitask;
  • High-level of interpersonal skills, working in a team environment with effective communication both verbally and in writing;
  • Has completed the following basic certifications such as working at heights, WHMIS, and Ontario 4 or 5 steps.
