Position Overview

Under the direction and supervision of the program director, the Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) plays a key role providing support, promoting recovery, and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary staff to help clients develop an appropriate action plan. RSS must have lived experience as a consumer of mental health, substance abuse services.

CST consists of mental health rehabilitation services and supports to decrease hospitalization and crisis episodes and increase community functioning for the individual to achieve rehabilitative, resiliency and recovery goals. CST facilitates illness self-management, skill building, identification and use of adaptive and compensatory skills, identification and use of natural supports, and use of community resources. CST services will be provided in natural settings a majority of the time and service location will be based on the needs of the individuals supported.

Salary: $36,000-47,000/year

Location: Joliet, IL

Shift: Variable weekday; 2 evening shifts per week

Essential Functions

  • Provides support to individuals experiencing mental health crisis
  • Provides supports in natural settings and location based on the needs of the individuals supported
  • Facilitates development of an appropriate plan of action that will ensure the safety and comfort of those in crisis.
  • Assists individuals in identifying strengths, recovery and wellness goals, and barriers
  • Role model for effective coping techniques, self-help strategies, and self-care
  • Supports individuals in creating a Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) or Peer- to-Peer plan
  • Ability to recognize and take appropriate action with high-risk indicators
  • Supports individuals in developing empowerment skill through self-advocacy to combat stigma
  • Conducts outreach and follow up with individuals
  • Maintains service documentation

Skills And Abilities

  • Ability and knowledge of basic computer programs for service documentation
  • Strong communication skills
  • Teaching skills, non-judgmental personality, and empathic listening skills

Physical Demands

  • Lift over 40 pounds from floor to waist unassisted
  • Push and pull up to 75 pounds; push wheelchairs up to 200 pounds
  • Perform physical movements such as squatting, stooping, crouching, and kneeling
  • Stand, sit, or remain stationary for prolonged periods
  • Be able to push wheelchairs up to 200 pounds
  • Remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods

Qualifications

  • Lived experience as a consumer of mental health, substance abuse services
  • High School Diploma/GED or higher education
  • Experience either as a consumer of or facilitator of groups
  • WRAP Certification or desire to pursue WRAP Certificate
  • Current CRSS or desire to pursue CRSS state certification
