Position Description
First Judicial District Public Defender’s Office
Serving Carter, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington Counties in Northeast Tennessee
The First Judicial District Public Defender’s Office in Northeast Tennessee seeks a full-time Assistant Public Defender. This position offers immediate courtroom exposure, strong mentorship, and an opportunity to serve a diverse community in a client-centered practice. Assignments may include representation in General Sessions or Circuit Court depending on experience.
The First Judicial District Public Defender’s Office provides high-quality, client-centered legal representation to individuals charged with criminal offenses who cannot afford private counsel. Our office serves a four-county region in Northeast Tennessee, including the city of Johnson City and surrounding rural communities.
We believe public defense is a vital form of public service and an essential safeguard for fairness in the justice system. Our attorneys are assigned to individual clients, not just court dockets, and are encouraged to build relationships rooted in trust and advocacy. We are committed to ethical, compassionate defense work that recognizes the dignity of every person we represent.
Our practice includes General Sessions and Circuit Court representation, and our team is known for professionalism, collaboration, and dedication to clients. Attorneys in our office regularly appear before judges who respect and value the role of the public defender.
