What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do? As a Codes Compliance Inspector with the City of Newport News Codes Compliance Department, you will ensure that residential and commercial properties comply with federal, state, and local ordinances. Reporting to a Senior Codes Compliance Inspector, your role will evolve through three levels, each offering increased responsibilities and opportunities for career growth. As a Codes Compliance Inspector I, you will perform inspections of properties and signage to ensure compliance with the Virginia Maintenance Code and local ordinances. Your daily tasks will include reviewing plans and drawings, research property deeds, and advising property owners on maintenance and zoning matters. You will investigate citizen complaints, issue violation notifications, and may need to testify in court. Detailed documentation and daily reports will be essential parts of your routine. As a Codes Compliance Inspector II, building on the responsibilities of Inspector I, you will handle more complex inspections and regulatory compliance for conditional use permits and special exceptions. You will coordinate the removal of debris, non-conforming signs, and abandoned vehicles, and assist with the demolition of unsafe structures. Additionally, you will provide directions to junior inspectors and assist with their training. Your role will also involve preparing detailed project documentation and inspection logs. As a Codes Compliance Inspector III, you will lead special projects and oversee daily assignments for other inspectors. You will serve as a key advisor on zoning-related issues. Your expertise will be crucial in condemning unsafe properties and coordinating citizen relocations when necessary. You will ensure regulatory compliance for conditional zoning and respond to related inquiries, maintaining high standards of safety and compliance. Throughout all levels, strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as you will develop professional relationships and handle customer service issues with tact. Effective time management and decision-making abilities are also crucial to plan and organize your daily work routine and establishing priorities. How much money can I make? This role has three (3) levels, each with its own full salary range:

Codes Compliance Inspector I: $42,120.00 - $69,498.00

Codes Compliance Inspector II: $44,437.00 - $73,320.00

Codes Compliance Inspector III: $46,881.00 - $77,353.00

What are the qualifications for this position? This position includes three (3) levels, distinguished by the complexity of work performed, qualifications, and years of experience. All levels require a high school diploma, and; Codes Compliance Inspector I: One (1) year of experience in property maintenance, zoning codes, or law enforcement; Codes Compliance Inspector II: 2-4 years of experience in property maintenance, zoning codes, or law enforcement; Codes Compliance Inspector III: 5-7 years of experience in property maintenance, zoning codes, or law enforcement; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

What else should I know? This role requires designation as Conservator of the Peace and must obtain and maintain certifications as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (VDHCD) within 18 months of employment. In addition, you must possess and maintain certification as a Zoning Official from the Virginia Association of Zoning Officials for eligibility as a Codes Compliance Inspector III
