What would a typical day on the job be like? What work would I do? As a Building Codes Inspector with the City of Newport News Codes Compliance Department, you will ensure the safety and compliance of new and remodeled residential and commercial buildings. Reporting to a Senior Building Codes Inspector, your daily responsibilities include conducting thorough inspections to ensure adherence to the Virginia Construction Code and local ordinances. This involves examining plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and structural work, as well as materials used, and equipment installed. You will also inspect new and existing elevators for safety compliance. Each day, you will review building plans and blueprints, visit construction sites, and perform detailed inspections to verify that all work meets code requirements. Common inspections include checking the installation of electrical systems, plumbing fixtures, HVAC systems, and structural components like beams and foundations. Advising property owners and contractors on code standards and coordinating with utility companies will be part of your routine. In cases of noncompliance, you will issue violation notifications and court summonses and may need to testify in court. Detailed documentation and daily reports are essential. Providing excellent customer service by addressing inquiries and concerns from the public is crucial. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary, as you will develop professional relationships and handle customer service issues with tact. What are the qualifications for this position? This position requires a high school diploma and 3-5 years journey level experience in building trade or elevator maintenance OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master certification in a building trade preferred. This role requires designation as Conservator of the Peace.
