Job Description
At NorthBay Health, the Coder I is a member of the Health Information Management Team responsible for converting diagnoses and procedures for emergency and outpatient cases into ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS codes in an accurate and timely manner. The Coder I can understand the clinical content of the health record and utilize an EHR system/encoder to perform job duties. Abstracts demographic and physician data to meet both internal and regulatory requirements for reporting utilizing the hospital’s abstracting system. All work is carried out in accordance with the rules, regulations and coding conventions of the American Hospital Association (Coding Clinic), ICD, CMS, HCAI, and NorthBay Health coding guidelines.
Qualifications
Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
Certification: Requires one of the following credentials: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) in good standing.

Experience
- Two or more years of experience coding ICD10/CPT in an HIM department in an acute care hospital is preferred.
- Experience with electronic health records/encoder systems required
- Skills:
- Demonstrated knowledge of anatomy and physiology; medical terminology, disease process, reimbursement methodologies, (DRGs, HCC’s, APCs); and the conventions, rules, guidelines for current coding classification (ICD10-CM, CPT and HCPCS).
- Demonstrated understanding of the clinical content of a health record.
- Requires the knowledge of the business use of computer hardware and software
- Microsoft Office: Email, Word, Excel
- Ability and desire to hit metrics upon training (idle time is also monitored on this hourly paid position)
- Technically savvy (ability to learn software and troubleshoot equipment as needed)
- Must have a private, distraction-free area in your home for working (HIPAA reasons)
- Web-cam training will be used frequently for team engagement.
