Knowledge/Experience: A Bachelor’s Degree preferred with six months of behavioral health experience preferably in a residential treatment setting.

Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Cottage Manager, a Residential Youth Mentor provides supervision and direct care to students and ensures the delivery of individualized treatment plans while maintaining a supportive and therapeutic environment; including intervening and managing crisis situations with shift team under the guidance of cottage manager, and managing on-task students.
Major Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety of students by providing constant monitoring and supervision. Support the students environmentally and emotionally and ensure delivery of individualized treatment plans. Thoroughly and effectively utilize the agency’s crisis intervention model including the ability to perform physical restraint techniques, if absolutely necessary.
- Attend weekly team meetings led by Cottage Manager and program clinician. While at meetings, contribute and review each student in a milieu review as well and engage in providing insight and awareness to each students’ progress, areas of growth, student awareness, group dynamics, and major safety concerns and provide insight and contributions.
- Pre-shift planning to prepare an engaging shift schedule for students that provides opportunities for students to engage in all activities equally, accommodates possible limitations, and meets all of their day-to-day needs, while providing them the opportunity to grow and change. Review student needs and concerns, plan for potential crisis situations, critical events and apply crisis support plans. Plan for meal preparation, student laundry, and other student needs throughout the shift. Contribute to post-shift debriefing at the end of each shift; give feedback to staff on areas needing improvement and recognition of strengths.
- Ensure that shifts run according to the schedule. Maintain a safe environment which allows students to work through their goals, providing emotional, physical, and environmental supports to students so they can best achieve their goals. Ensure that a least restrictive environment is provided while ensuring safety for staff and students.
- Ensure completion of required mental health and program documentation within mandatory compliance and licensure standards including for progress notes and incident reports. Ensure communication regarding shift events to legal guardians, residential staff, and agency compliance staff, within agency’s standards.
- Promote student success by developing positive therapeutic relationships with students and work to understand students emotional and physical needs. Recognize student strengths and help connect students’ feelings to their behaviors to promote self-awareness and help guide students to making lasting change. Engage students in formal processing methods under the agency crisis intervention model to help understand how students can be better served.
- Maintain and role-model professional and consistent communication with the students’ guardians and other members of their child and family teams.
- Display competence and responsiveness to cultural differences present in both customer & employee populations.
- Actively participate in the agency’s Continuous Quality Improvement process.
- Complete all other duties as assigned.
