Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Job Description

Position Overview

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), also known as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in some states, is a healthcare professional who provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and physicians. LPNs play a crucial role in patient care by monitoring patient health, administering medications, and providing comfort and support to patients and their families.

Primary Responsibilities

Licensed Practical Nurses deliver direct patient care in various healthcare settings, focusing on basic nursing functions such as medication administration, vital sign monitoring, wound care, and patient education. They work as part of a healthcare team to ensure patients receive safe, compassionate, and effective care.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Direct Patient Care

  • Monitor and record patient vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration)
  • Administer prescribed medications via oral, topical, and injection routes
  • Perform basic wound care, dressing changes, and catheter care
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living (bathing, eating, mobility)
  • Collect specimens for laboratory testing
  • Observe and report changes in patient condition to supervising RN or physician

Patient Monitoring and Assessment

  • Conduct routine health assessments and screenings
  • Monitor patient responses to treatments and medications
  • Recognize and report signs of complications or adverse reactions
  • Maintain accurate documentation of patient care and observations
  • Assist with diagnostic procedures and tests

Medication Administration

  • Prepare and administer medications according to physician orders
  • Verify patient identity and medication accuracy using safety protocols
  • Monitor patients for medication side effects and therapeutic responses
  • Maintain medication records and inventory
  • Educate patients about medication purposes and side effects

Patient Education and Support

  • Provide basic health education to patients and families
  • Teach patients about disease management and self-care techniques
  • Offer emotional support and comfort to patients and families
  • Assist with discharge planning and follow-up care instructions
  • Promote patient safety and infection control practices

Documentation and Communication

  • Maintain detailed patient records and care plans
  • Document all nursing interventions and patient responses
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare team members
  • Participate in shift reports and team meetings
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and facility policies

Equipment and Supply Management

  • Operate and maintain basic medical equipment
  • Ensure proper sterilization and cleaning of equipment
  • Monitor and order supplies as needed
  • Maintain clean and organized work environment

Education and Licensing Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Current state licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Current BLS certification
  • Previous healthcare experience
  • Variable Day/Eve
  • Facility housing provided
