Description

OBJECTIVE: Develop and implement expansion plan for Stars mentoring program which connects students and mentors for mutually transformative relationships

SCOPE: This position interacts with all programs of Stars

REPORTS TO: Associate Director of Program Planning and Evaluation

HOURS: 20-27 hours per week, occasional weekends and evenings.

COMPENSATION: $20.00-$25.00

CLASSIFICATION: This position is classified as part time, non-exempt.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Research and implement expansion plan for mentoring program
  • Redesign and advise organization on how to implement safety protocol and policies for mentor and youth engagement
  • Recruit and train mentors
  • Develop a support system for mentors
  • Oversee, supervise, and evaluate mentor coaches/mentor support system
  • Facilitate and network community building opportunities for mentors and students, along with mentoring team
  • Network with other mentoring programs and partners in the Pasadena area and area of designated expansion
  • Explore and develop relationships in designated expansion area
  • Train and empower mentors based on best practices in the field of mentoring
  • Demonstrate experience in specializing in training in mentoring high school and college-age students, particularly those impacted by the criminal justice system, including youth with justice system involvement or exposure to gang-influenced environments
  • Demonstrate commitment to cultural humanity and trauma-informed relationship building- approaching mentorship with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to learn from each youth’s lived experiences
  • Give overall vision and direction to the mentoring program so that the following is accomplished:

For Students

  • Develop student’s appreciation of their culture and personal self-esteem
  • Develop students academically, socially, economically, and spiritually
  • Ensure students access pathways to higher education (college, trade school, certificate, etc.), if they so choose
  • Create an open environment where students can explore their faith
  • Equip students to be a positive influence/ impact in their communities

For Mentors

  • Build relationships with the students family and friends
  • Provide processing space for mentors as they navigate new cultures and situations
  • Recruit and train mentors to be trustworthy and confidential
  • Create an open environment where mentors share can explore their faith

Internal Team Role

  • Meet regularly with the Associate Director for program planning and evaluation.
  • Lead mentoring staff meetings and oversee coaches for expansion.
  • Work in collaboration with College Success Program Manager, High School Manager and Middle School Manager.
  • Participate in regular Stars tactical and strategy meetings
  • Attend related trainings/conferences as necessary
  • Participate in and support other Stars activities as necessary to meet organizational goals

Relationships

  • Reports to: Stars Associate Director of Program Planning and Evaluation
  • Works with: Executive Director and Stars staff, volunteers, students, parents, various partners and community agencies.

Requirements

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work at a desk in an office or home-office setting; Sit at an office desk for extended periods of time.
  • Work for extended periods of time at a computer, requiring the ability to send and receive information with necessary optical, auditory, and manual dexterity.
  • Use a keyboard and mouse to enter, retrieve or transfer words or data information and/or move from screen to screen on the computer to view information.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills; comprehend and speak English.
  • Display the reading skills necessary to research and proofread written material.
  • Written/Spoken Spanish is a plus
  • Occasional evening and weekend work events.
  • Ability to travel to the Antelope Valley (AV) at least once a week, or as needed, to provide on-site support to Stars staff and mentoring participants in the region. (Mileage reimbursement provided)
