Position: Lead PeriOperative Technician - Full-Time - Shift

Compensation

The estimated pay for this position is $23.5264 to $28.9345. The rates shown include a 6% premium pay (base= $-$ plus 6%). This reflects only a portion of the total compensation package for this position. Additional compensation may be available for this role through differentials, incentives, and bonuses. In addition, this position may be eligible for participation and company contributions into the Kern County Employees’ Retirement Plan.

Definition

Under the direction of the Perioperative Leadership is responsible for leading the daily activities of the PeriOperative Associates (POA) for maintaining the cleanliness of the Perioperative Departments, patient and equipment transportation, and maintenance of assigned supply inventory.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This classification is a lead level of the PeriOperative Associates within the PeriOperative Department. The incumbent will be expected to have advanced knowledge of environment of care cleaning/disinfection, patient transport, patient positioning and procedural case preparation under the direction of the R. The Lead PeriOperative Associate (LPOA) will perform daily lead responsibilities, and is required to effectively and respectfully interact with patients, the public and hospital staff on a daily basis

Essential Functions

  • Serves as a lead to include assigning and monitoring work, training employees on work methods and providing direction; including contributing to performance evaluations and making employment recommendations;
  • Performs cleanings tasks in patient and non-patient care areas within the perioperative department as assigned;
  • Demonstrates an excellent working knowledge of cleaning and disinfectant techniques and Universal Precautions with ability to apply them in all phases of perioperative assigned responsibilities;
  • Removes, transports, and disposes of refuse and contaminated material according to perioperative and industry standards;
  • Prepares surgical suites to include the assembly, cleaning and disassembly of multiple surgical surfaces and equipment ensuring a clean surgical environment;
  • Monitor, order, stock, and rotate general inventory in the perioperative department within the required timeframes;
  • Safely transport patients within the hospital as directed; assists in the transfer of patients to and from wheel chairs and beds along with positioning of patients under the direction of clinical staff;
  • Distributes and collects patient trays;
  • Assists in patient preparedness activities such as clipping and cast removal.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with patients, the public and hospital staff;
  • Transports and/or retrieves perioperative materials to and from various locations in the hospital;
  • Complete required documentation within established timelines;
  • Maintains real time communication within the unit regarding status of availability and assigned work;
  • Ensures radio transmitter is operational and utilized when on duty;
  • Conducts a hand-off report to oncoming shift as indicated;
  • Attends departmental/hospital in-service orientation;
  • Assists in mentoring, training, and development of other PeriOperative Associate staff; serves as a resource to staff for questions and problem solving;
  • Identifies room and facility maintenance needs and reports to appropriate staff;

Other Functions

  • Performs other job related duties as required.

Employment Standards

  • High School diploma or GED and one-year experience in an acute care facility in either housekeeping, transportation, laundry or operating room/procedure suite. Two years of experience is preferred.
  • Appointees not possessing the American Heart Association Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card at time of hire must successfully complete appropriate training and qualify for the RQI Provider certification within 60 days of employment. As a continued condition of employment, employee must maintain RQI Provider certification and competency.

Knowledge Of

Basic mathematics; English grammar and spelling, public relations, sanitation and general safety.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions; read, compare and verify information; perform duties in accordance with the hospital’s and department’s customer service goals; communicate effectively with patients, visitors and hospital staff; develop and maintain positive working relationships with patients and the public and co-workers; recognize needs of patients dependent upon such factors as patient’s age and medical conditions; organize and perform tasks efficiently; learn hospital and governmental safety requirements and procedures; observe personal cleanliness and neatness guidelines.

Additional Requirements

Employees must maintain all health requirements designated by Kern Medical.

Depending on assignment incumbents may be required to possess and maintain specific certificates of competency as a condition of employment.

Supplemental

Dependent upon assignment, applicants may be required to pass an extensive background investigation, and be fingerprinted. Disqualification for felony, misdemeanor, and traffic offenses will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

As Disaster Service Workers, all county employees are expected to remain at work, or to report for work as soon as practicable following a significant emergency or disaster.

If position responsibilities require driving a personal vehicle, then possession of a current valid California Driver’s License and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy (ENG-EC-119) is required.
