Position Summary: The Division of Family, Community and Student Empowerment includes a diverse portfolio of offices, including Family and Community Engagement, Students in Temporary Housing and Foster Care, Community Schools and Strategic Partnerships, Attendance Research and Innovations, Office of School Wellness Programs and Office of Language Access. These teams work together to assist the Chancellor in serving the largest school system in the country, composed of approximately 1 million students and ensure that parents, students, and all New York City communities have enhanced opportunities for support with a focus on family empowerment, community supports and wellness and language access for New York City Public Schools (NYCPS). Improved cooperative relationships with parents, superintendents, principals, teachers and stakeholders in support of public-school students and families helps to advance student achievement and empower authentic voice and feedback to NYCPS.

The Language Access Engagement Liaison is crucial in building and maintaining strong relationships with internal stakeholders with NYCPS. This role provides guidance, support, and comprehensive training to NYCPS staff on language access processes and best practices for engaging with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) families. The Language Access Engagement Liaison monitors the effectiveness of language access services, identifies areas for improvement, and helps address challenges related to language access. Performs related work.

Reports to: Language Access Integration Specialist

Direct Reports: N/A

Key Relationships: NYCPS Language Access Coordinators (LACs), Central and District-based staff and OLA teams.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for school-based Language Access Coordinators (LAC) and district office points, addressing language access related questions and concerns.
  • Assist NYCPS in developing the Language Translation and Interpretation (LTI) of their annual Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP).
  • Coordinate and deliver customized language access training to designated NYCPS staff.
  • Assist in providing guidance to NYCPS on LAC designations, and School Allocation Memorandum (SAM) Translation and Interpretation Funds expenditures based on OLA School Profile reports analysis.
  • Assist with the development of strategies and the creation of plans for targeted school visits, while generating reports that assess the proficiency of districts and schools in providing language access.
  • Support schools in efficiently managing language service escalations by evaluating parents’ language preferences and staff language proficiency, to optimize resource allocation, enhancing communication, and improving overall service delivery.
  • Collaborate with the Language Access Integration Specialist in curating key content for communications such as newsletters, bulk and customized emails and presentations.
  • Foster strong relationships with internal NYCPS stakeholders to enhance language access support for families.
  • Contribute to the development and oversight of Language Access Advisory Boards, analyzing trends within NYCPS and the industry to improve OLA policies and procedures.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum

  • High school graduation or equivalent and three years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to duties described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above

Plus

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of the experience described in "1" above.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with the New York City public school system.
  • Strong logistical and long-term planning experience.
  • Experience in public speaking.
  • Ability to function and meet aggressive deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with customer service and problem-solving.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Strong Project Management Skills.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills in Word, PowerPoint, Excel and SharePoint.
  • Experience working with virtual platforms, e.g., Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.

Salary: $51,094 - $54,466

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
