This is an exciting role supporting MPC’s efforts to shape the company’s reputation by engaging community organizations and other stakeholders and promote sustainable growth.
This role will primarily support activities in the greater Los Angeles/Long Beach areas, where the company has business interests. The selected candidate will report to the Advanced Senior CSR & Community Relations Representative, who is also based in Southern California.
The CSR and Community Relations team is part of the company’s Communications & Community Relations organization. This role belongs to a family of jobs with increasing responsibility, competency and skill level. Actual position title and pay grade will be based on the selected candidate’s experience and qualifications.

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES:
- Member of a team of regionally based Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Community Relations representatives responsible for planning and executing corporate social responsibility strategies, community relations efforts, and community investment activities at the site level:
- Develop and implement CSR, community relations, and community investment plans informed by strong knowledge of local community dynamics, needs and trends.
- Identify high-impact, strategic community investment opportunities while developing key partnerships in the communities where MPC operates.
- Plan and execute programs and initiatives in collaboration with site leadership, Communications, Government Affairs, Human Resources and community leaders.
- Evaluate and respond to community investment funding requests; review, track and report on community investment activities.
- Measure and communicate value of CSR activities; track and report progress against goals with internal and external stakeholders.
- Regularly update leaders on the effectiveness of CSR and community relations plans and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
- Coordinate and facilitate committees to execute employee giving and volunteerism programs that enhance employee engagement, as well as MPC’s relationships in the community.
- Facilitate outreach to community leaders and stakeholders in support of incident/crisis response efforts, at times in accordance with the national incident management system framework.
- Work with local Government Affairs and corporate/operations leadership to collaboratively develop, execute, evaluate and refine site-level or regional stakeholder engagement strategies.
- Provide local/regional perspective and input to the enterprise-wide corporate social responsibility and community relations strategy and multi-year implementation plan.
- Provide content for various internal and external communications, including the annual Sustainability Report and company social media channels, highlighting key CSR and community relations activities and results.
- Provide regular updates on MPC enterprise-wide and local developments to key external stakeholders; may plan and execute Community Advisory Panel (CAP) meetings.
- Serve as primary liaison to key community leaders and some local agencies in support of local public policy goals and in collaboration with government affairs.
- Represent MPC on various non-profit organization boards and potentially participate in select business trade organizations and civic/community groups at the local level.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed.
- Lead special projects and perform additional duties as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree is required. Major in business, communications, public affairs, policy, non-profit management, engineering, social sciences or related field is preferred.
- Minimum of six (6) years of relevant experience is required. Specialty in corporate social responsibility, community relations, education, communications or human resources in a business, non-profit or governmental setting is highly preferred.
- At least six (6) years of demonstrated experience leading initiatives focused on a range of local community issues and topics highly preferred.
- Deep knowledge of and presence in the communities being represented highly preferred.
- Experience in the energy, manufacturing or transportation industries highly preferred.
- Strong internal and external relationship-building skills and comfort interacting with all levels of an organization as well as leading teams with “informal authority.”
- Strong communication skills with the ability to generate support across an organization and among internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and sense of urgency; takes the initiative to build plans and processes applying expertise and insights gathered through collaboration and listening.
- Values teamwork and collaboration and is willing to perform a wide range of tasks with a strong willingness to advance knowledge.
