Summary:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Construction Specialist is responsible for advancing workplace safety and environmental health initiatives across multiple departments and construction projects. This position plays an integral role in the development and continuous improvement of various safety programs, including compliance with regulatory standards and fostering a strong safety culture.

The role focuses on developing and improving safety programs, conducting risk assessments, identifying potential hazards, ensuring Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) compliance, and supporting project completion checklists for seamless commissioning and turnover. The specialist collaborates with teams to create preventive action plans, reviews new equipment and processes to mitigate risks, and drives measurable improvements in safety outcomes while promoting a strong safety culture.

Moreover, the EHS Specialist is engaged in major projects and new initiatives across all areas of the theme park, contributing to the evolution of safety practices and enhancing the overall wellbeing of employees and guests. Through a proactive approach, strategic planning, and hands-on engagement, this role is essential in reinforcing the company core value of “Making Safety a Priority”.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and document site specific Lock Out Tag Out procedures to control hazardous energy during maintenance or servicing of machinery, ensuring compliance with company, local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Assist in the pre-qualification and compliance of site contractors and vendors within the USH EHS Contractor Safety Database in accordance with the UDX written program.
  • Recognize, evaluate, and provide guidance on potential safety or environmental hazards to minimize impact on business operations at Universal Studios Hollywood and CityWalk.
  • Provide project status updates and safety performance metrics to department management and other project stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and accountability.
  • Actively engage in EHS responsibilities by following established UDX policies, procedures, and training initiatives, contributing to a strong safety culture.
  • Ensure project compliance to local and federal environmental, health, and safety regulations upon completion.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with all project stakeholders to ensure alignment on safety objectives and foster effective teamwork.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in safety, occupational health, or environmental studies preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in an environmental health and safety role; or equivalent combination of and experience.
  • Professional designation such as OHST, CHST, ASP, or CSP or other nationally recognized professional designation preferred but not required.
  • Expertise in critical safety concepts, including Cal OSHA/Title 8 regulations, lock out tag out, fall protection, walking working surfaces, steel erection, power tool usage, and electrical safety.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Teams) as well as electronic database and recordkeeping systems like SharePoint, GenSuite, Intelex, Avetta, and BROWZ.

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong verbal and written communication/ presentation skills.
  • Experience in writing health and safety reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to effectively present information & respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Prior theme park or amusement park employment experience highly desired.

  • Lock out/tag out; electrical safety (major portion) - lock out tag out, fall protection, walking working surfaces, steel erection, power tool usage, and electrical safety.

  • Create procedure in partnership with other vendors

  • Fall protection procedure

  • Document writing

  • Theme Park experience is a plus (no production exp)

  • Senior experience would be to above; it’s a specialist nothing about 10 years
