About The Role
This position is part of a newly established AI & Data Engineering team within the Advanced Quantitative Sciences function at Novartis. Our mission is to leverage automation and artificial intelligence to unlock the potential of complex scientific data sources. The purpose of this role is to support this mission through the development and implementation of computational automation methods for tasks such as data extraction, preparation, quality assurance, as well as the AI-assisted analysis of unstructured or high-dimensional data. Working with others in our organization, a successful candidate will operationalize newly developed methods, ensuring their safe and effective application to drive measurable impact in our drug development day-to-day work.

Role Requirements
Essential Requirements:
The salary for this position is expected to range between $119,700-222,300 per year for Data Scientist I, and $132,300-245,700 per year for a Data Scientist II; level will commensurate with experience.
The final salary offered is determined based on factors like, but not limited to, relevant skills and experience, and upon joining Novartis will be reviewed periodically. Novartis may change the published salary range based on company and market factors. Your compensation will include a performance-based cash incentive and, depending on the level of the role, eligibility to be considered for annual equity awards. US-based eligible employees will receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, life and disability benefits, a 401(k) with company contribution and match, and a variety of other benefits. About The Role
Your Key Responsibilities:
- Develop AI / automation tools and solutions to accelerate work with documents and data from clinical trials. Deliver technical excellence by designing and implementing solutions from concept to deployment.
- Build and maintain collaborative working relationships with partners in the Advanced Quantitative Sciences function and beyond to foster a culture where new technology can be leveraged in a safe, responsible and transparent manner.
- Understand risk, quality, and compliance in a drug development setting, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements as well as data security and privacy best practices.
- Remain current with industry trends and advancements, helping to strengthen the connection between Novartis and the external AI community.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning, constructive collaboration, and innovation within the team, collaborating on tasks and projects to ensure deadlines are met.
This position will be located at East Hanover, NJ or Cambridge, MA site and will not have the ability to be located remotely.
Role Requirements
Essential Requirements:
- MSc or PhD in Computer Science/Engineering, Data Sciences, Artificial Intelligence / Machine learning, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics or any other computational quantitative science with a minimum of 2+ years of developing technical solutions for automation or AI.
- Expert in software / AI engineering practices (including versioning, testing, documentation, release management, deployment of models, agile & related software tools).
- Excellent coding skills (including package development, deployment, advanced programming) in R and Python.
- Experience developing LLM / LMM applications and working with agentic AI.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (fluent in English, verbal and written) effectively bridging scientific and business needs
- Specialist data science / development expertise in one or more of the following: Deep learning & analytical frameworks such as pytorch, jax, tensorflow; reinforcement learning, bioinformatics & data science.
- Strong working knowledge of at least one large-scale data processing technology (e.g. High-performance computing, distributed computing), databases and underlying technology.
- Prior exposure to work in life sciences or drug development is highly beneficial.
