Wellness Director

Position Summary:

Develops, organizes, implements, and monitors a range of health and wellness programs based on member’s requests, research, and previous successes.

Essential Functions:

  • Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, and supervises wellness staff and volunteers to ensure exceptional program delivery.
  • Researches and integrates emerging trends in health, fitness, and wellness to keep programming fresh, engaging, and relevant.
  • Leads the planning and execution of dynamic, results-driven programs that meet member interests, community health priorities, and strategic objectives.
  • Teaches and/or substitutes for Group Exercise classes as needed.
  • Coaches, supports, and evaluates staff performance; implements corrective actions when necessary to ensure a high-performing team.
  • Builds relationships and gathers feedback from members to shape programming, address concerns, and support retention efforts.
  • Creates and manages the wellness department budget to meet financial goals and ensure resource efficiency.
  • Coordinates equipment maintenance and replacement schedules to maintain a safe, effective workout environment.
  • Partners with Marketing and Membership teams to promote wellness offerings and success stories through print, digital, and social media platforms.
  • Tracks and analyzes program data to evaluate participation, impact, and member satisfaction; makes data-informed decisions for improvement.
  • Ensures all wellness areas are operating in compliance with YMCA safety standards and risk management practices.
  • Supports community outreach and partnerships to expand access to YMCA wellness services.

Qualifications:

 Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Recreation, or related field with 2 years related experience; or 5 or more years experience successfully managing a high activity wellness program.

 Experience in planning and directing a wide range of health and wellness programs.

 Ability to create marketing and communication programs for this function.

 Experience in dealing with, and resolving, a wide range of customer issues.

 Experience in professionally dealing with safety issues and emergencies.

 Proven capability to effectively manage staff and volunteers.

 Experience in recruiting, leading, and developing high performance team members.

Physical Demands:

 Ability to engage sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform and demonstrate essential functions, and supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities.

 Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.

 Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing, walking, or running for varying lengths of time.
