Job Summary

Under general guidance and supervision, develops new cosmetic formulas and/or modifies existing formulas from various product categories as assigned. Applies key cosmetic industry knowledge and standard formulation principles for execution of formula development through scaleup. Able to use begins to demonstrate critical thinking skills and learns to independently manage formulation issues during development. Performs work as independent contributor with moderate direct supervision as technical expertise to meet project deliverables. Supports department goals, communicates project related information to cross-functional partners, and begins to summarize technical contributions.

About The Role

Responsibilities and Expectations:

Solid Understanding Of Cosmetics Chemistry

  • Candidates are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices of cosmetic chemistry, including formulation techniques and ingredient interactions. A background in organic and analytical chemistry is essential for developing safe and effective cosmetic products.

Practical Skills In Cosmetic Formulation Laboratory

  • Applicants should be familiar with using laboratory equipment for cosmetic product formulation and testing. Familiarity with tools such as balance, viscometer, pH meter, rheometer and mixer, and other standard lab instruments is expected. The role requires hands-on experience in handling chemicals, conducting experiments, and working within a cosmetic formulation lab environment.
  • Applies fundamental formulation techniques and principles to create and/or modify existing skincare and/or makeup formulations. Reports project status to supervisor. Seeks consultation with supervisor on non-standard or new technical issues. Begins to independently design unique formulations and innovate against chassis and ingredient simplification. Suggests and develops alternative ways to work/new methodologies/ new processes. Implements change with supervisor guidance
  • Executes routine tasks/responsibilities including data entry into proprietary laboratory software (e.g. LIMs & Agile) and begins to manage work with more undefined processes Delivers against multiple project priorities, analyze and interpret information from a variety of sources to meet project deliverables. Uses concrete examples and demonstrations to gain alignment with immediate team and leaders. Makes continuous improvement suggestions on improving lab processes with a plan on delivering against those.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional departments to ensure successful formula commercialization. Reviews stability tests and critically applies data to interpretation of formula acceptability. Recognizes compatibility or other formula technical issues and consults with supervisor or other internal resources to address. Begins to apply critical thinking skills in establishing bulk specifications and provide recommendations against project needs.
  • Makes routine decisions that involve direct application of functional knowledge of discipline and begins to demonstrate critical thinking skills in execution of work. Communicate issues to supervisor as needed for assistance to resolve conflict. Interprets information from a variety of sources to deliver against project needs. Collaborates with others within department on projects and initiatives to accomplish team objectives. Begins to resolve conflicts with peers and seek supervisor assistance as needed
  • Delivers technical communications on project data, communicates project status to supervisor and within project team. Develops technical summaries at project completion with guidance. Works closely with supervisor to provide technical information specific to project deliverables. Working proficiency at technical writing and communication. Beginning proficiency with oral presentations and reports.

Skills & Experience

Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree but PhD. preferred

Education Focus: Chemistry

Experience: 3+ years

Field of Experience: Cosmetic formula development or a related formulation experience

Additional Skills & Abilities

  • Must possess full use and application of standard industry formulation principles, concepts and techniques to develop formulas and perform corresponding laboratory procedures.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects with guidance from supervisor.
  • Must possess a basic understanding of the principles of formula stability and biophysical measurements as it applies to product formulation.
  • Awareness of general product aesthetics, ingredient regulations, performance, and safety evaluation used within the cosmetic industry is desired.
  • Working proficiency at technical writing and communication. Beginning proficiency with oral presentations and reports
