Job Summary

Teachers have an oversight role for all students within the Academy setting to ensure a safe academic environment conducive to learning and well managed and structured behaviorally. Teachers ensure proper planning and follow up for the academic and behavior progress of all students and work cooperatively with the various departments and teams within the Academy. Teachers will have the oversight and responsibility to manage his or her classroom, implementing instruction and behavior strategies that meet the needs of the whole child and the students at the Academy. Teachers ensure accurate and timely reporting to the Dean of Academics as required by Academy governmental bodies, regarding students’ performance and challenges, with recommendations for action and a summary of actions taken.

Description Of Duties

Student Academic Achievement

  • Prepare students to meet academic testing requirements (internal, state-mandated, and federal-mandated) and to achieve academic growth by implementing Academy curriculum and philosophy to the classes he or she is assigned to teach
  • Facilitate and communicate knowledge and strategies for learning to students
  • Monitor academic progress of entire class and individual students

Use of Academy System

  • Implement Academy curriculum and philosophy to the classes he/she is assigned to teach
  • Plan objectives, instruction, and practice work to maximize learning
  • Ensure that student learning occurs in class

Classroom Management

  • Apply Academy and classroom rules consistently and effectively
  • Utilize positive discipline and ensure a positive school culture, utilizing preventive discipline where needed
  • Motivate and engage students
  • Communicate expectations to students clearly and consistently
  • Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment conducive to learning
  • Supervise students within the Academy setting and on Academy grounds

Professional Relationships

  • Motivate students to perform well and respond promptly to student needs
  • Maintain positive relationships with colleagues, administration and staff
  • Inspire respect and trust
  • Encourage students to participate in Academy events and activities
  • Support and work cooperatively with Academy staff
  • Maintain a positive attitude, follow instructions and respond to management direction

  • Meet attendance and punctuality guidelines

Accountability

  • Communicate to Dean of Academics regarding any and all areas of academic concern
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and appropriate student attendance and grade records as outlined by the Dean of Academics Maintain an orderly, secure, attractive, and nurturing classroom environment conducive to learning
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Academics

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association
  • Shall possess a valid State of Michigan Teaching Certificate with the appropriate endorsement(s) for all subject area(s) being taught
  • Must have evidence of meeting highly qualified requirements, as defined by No Child Left Behind
  • Teaching experience preferred
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation
  • Satisfactory performance ratings in delivery of instruction and classroom management
  • Satisfactory completion of oral and written interview
  • Criminal records clearance

Education & Experience

All administrators or other persons whose primary responsibility is administering instructional programs or as a chief business official shall meet the certification and continuing education requirements as described in MCL 380.1246. It is the employee’s responsibility to understand and fulfill any license and training obligations specific to position and/or for equipment that will be operated.

  • Occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
