The Young Adult Shelter (YAS)—a program of Volunteers of America (VOA)—offers a safe, welcoming space for young adults ages 18–24 who are navigating homelessness and other serious life challenges. Open every day of the year, YAS connects youth to meals, housing assistance, health and mental health services, and, most importantly, meaningful human connection.
We’re hiring part-time Overnight Shelter Support Staff (9pm- 9am) to join a passionate and mission-driven team. This is a great opportunity for someone who values flexibility, cares deeply about community, and wants to make a lasting difference in the lives of vulnerable young people.

What You’ll Do
- Welcome and build rapport with young adults entering the shelter
- Provide crisis response, support, and essential services overnight
- Ensure a safe, clean, and respectful environment for all guests
- Complete intakes, service logs, and incident documentation
- Prepare simple meals and help distribute hygiene supplies
- Uphold shelter rules with consistency and care

- You’re dependable, calm under pressure, and know how to set boundaries with compassion
- You bring lived or professional experience supporting high-risk, underserved communities
- You communicate clearly, document accurately, and work well both independently and on a team
- You’re comfortable with flexible hours and the challenges of overnight work
- High School Diploma or GED
- Eligible for Agency Affiliated Counselor (AAC) credential (must apply within 30 days of hire)
- Willingness to obtain the following within 6 months (VOA will provide support);
Food Handler's Permit
- Ability to pass a background check and access to reliable transportation
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Working with high-risk youth or marginalized communities
- Navigating stressful environments with patience and flexibility
- Managing time and tasks independently on overnight shifts
