Benefits Highlights
This position is for a one-year limited tenure role. Funding is currently not established to continue this position after the end of the limited tenure. This position will support Engineering’s mission to bring front-end design and innovation to new product development at Mayo Clinic. The position will help define the next generation of tools and technologies that enable us to deliver new products and better care for patients. The role contributes to Mayo Clinic’s commitment to transforming healthcare and improving patient outcomes through innovation and excellence by developing cutting-edge solutions and leveraging emerging technologies. This position will be focused on meeting with physicians and researchers and other internal staff who have identified opportunities in their area and are looking for new solutions, or staff who may have basic ideas for new products and need help prototyping the idea, advancing it, and proving its value. The products will be related to biomedical engineering systems including clinical medical devices, products to enable unique medical research, proof-of-concept prototypes, and other products related to medical care.
Some design processes exist, but the candidate needs to be flexible and adapt to the unique needs of a product and collaborator. Project approaches vary based on how advanced the idea is, the existing landscape of products and patents, perceived value, and leadership support. The candidate must have demonstrated experience working in innovative medical device design. The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to help define a path forward and navigate through the multiple known and unknown issues that arise when advancing innovative ideas.
Initial successful designs may lead to internal development projects where the candidate may lead teams of 2 to 8 engineers and support staff. The candidate will ensure appropriate design documentation is developed and follow project development processes.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success leading fast-paced innovation development, such as innovation sprints, and will have experience working with medical staff. Ideally, they will have multiple patents awarded, or another method to demonstrate creative thinking that has led to product success.
The candidate will mentor colleagues in rapid design techniques and develop this strategic initiative for the work unit. When applicable, they will ensure compliance with the Quality Management System and ensure projects align with safety risk management and regulatory requirements.
The candidate will not formally manage staff but will hold a leadership role in the work unit, helping move projects forward, overseeing continuous improvement, and leading efforts until the defined scope is achieved or formally canceled. The candidate will oversee a wide variety of assignments and must be able to keep multiple tasks in motion; they will manage diverse concurrent activities where skills in communicating and planning are key. They must be comfortable working with and presenting to senior leaders.
