Position Summary

The Vice President of Supply Chain is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for overseeing all aspects of procurement, production planning, logistics, and transportation. This individual will lead and optimize a complex, multi-site supply chain organization to ensure operational excellence, cost efficiency, regulatory compliance, and high service levels to our customers.

The role includes full leadership of Thatcher’s owned transportation company, which comprises 64 professional drivers and over 200 tankers and trailers. The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in chemical industry supply chains, including managing complex chemical inventories across multiple chemistries for diverse market segments such as Water/Wastewater Treatment, Oil & Gas, Agriculture, Food & Dairy, Construction, Mining, and Power Utilities. Experience in improving supply chain processes and ERP system development is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership
  • Develop and implement the long-term supply chain strategy aligned with company growth, customer service, and cost objectives.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the executive team on supply chain risk, opportunities, and investment decisions.
  • Evaluate total delivered costs for key products and develop strategies to optimize these costs.
  • Procurement
  • Lead a high-performing procurement team responsible for strategic and tactical purchasing of raw materials, packaging, indirect goods, and services.
  • Drive supplier performance, cost negotiations, and contract management, ensuring reliable and compliant sources for all critical materials.
  • Production Planning
  • Oversee demand forecasting, inventory optimization, and capacity planning across multiple manufacturing and distribution sites.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Operations, and Finance to align production schedules with customer demand and financial targets.
  • Logistics & Transportation
  • Manage Thatcher’s in-house transportation company, including driver safety, fleet maintenance, scheduling, compliance, and asset utilization.
  • Optimize the logistics network, including owned and third-party transportation partners, to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of products.
  • Maintain full DOT, EPA, and HAZMAT compliance across all logistics and fleet operations.
  • Supervise the management and deployment of railcar assets.
  • Market & Product Complexity Management
  • Direct the flow of a wide variety of chemical products with different chemistries across diverse end markets.
  • Ensure accurate handling, storage, and movement of materials serving highly regulated sectors, including food-grade and hazardous chemicals.
  • Tailor supply chain strategies to meet the service, safety, and regulatory needs of customers in multiple industries.
  • Process Improvement & ERP Development
  • Lead efforts to streamline and improve supply chain processes, reduce waste, and enhance productivity across procurement, planning, logistics, and transportation.
  • Oversee the ongoing development, implementation, and optimization of ERP systems to support supply chain visibility, planning accuracy, and decision-making.
  • Be prepared to train the team on the impact of material transactions on our financial statements.
  • Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for the supply chain, including cost, service levels, inventory turns, on-time delivery, and asset utilization.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts using Lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies.
  • Team Development
  • Recruit, mentor, and retain top talent across the supply chain organization.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, safety, collaboration, and innovation.

Qualifications

  • Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Chemical Engineering, Business, or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in supply chain roles within the chemical industry.
  • Proven track record of managing transportation assets, including drivers, railcar and truck/trailer assets.
  • Extensive experience with complex chemical supply chains across multiple chemistries and diverse market sectors.
  • Strong knowledge of hazardous materials handling, regulatory compliance (DOT, EPA, OSHA), and safety standards.
  • Demonstrated success in improving supply chain processes and leading ERP system development and implementation.
  • Experience leading complex, multi-site supply chain operations.
  • Preferred:
  • Master’s degree or MBA.
  • Certification in supply chain disciplines (e.g., APICS, CSCMP).
  • Advanced experience with integrated planning and supply chain analytics tools.
