Job Overview

Field Project Manager is responsible for overseeing all steel construction projects. We are looking for a positive and motivated project manager who can plan, coordinate, and manage all phases of the structural steel erection projects. A leader who takes pride in their work, has a strong work ethic and great attitude, will demonstrate accountability and ownership, and has strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills. The PM needs to have the ability to solve issues, plan for potential challenges, and remove roadblocks to ensure the project is completed on time, within budget, and within the Porter Steel quality standards.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Sequencing of project activities and creating an environment which is conducive to produce results.
  • Ability to develop an efficient, honest, and motivated team of employees which works hard to achieve the objectives of the project.
  • Ability to communicate with the clients, vendors, various external agencies, management, and internal staff regarding the status of the project. Is accountable for entire project to the client and executive team at all times.
  • Plan, manage, and coordinate all phases of structural steel erection projects. Working closely with others at an individual project site, ensuring the project is constructed in accordance with design, budget, and schedule.
  • Communicate, plan, and enforce health and safety rules at the project. Join weekly safety meetings. Document, record and address all safety issues.
  • Sets the project schedule and tempo. Develop, publish, and maintain 2 – 3 week look-ahead schedule. Ensure that the necessary resources are available to meet the schedule.
  • Carefully vet and approve Subcontractors and.
  • Lead, motivate, and manage Porter Steel labor forces at the project. Take an active role in mentoring and supporting team members.
  • Conduct regular site visits to monitor progress, quality, budget, cost control, and safety compliance.
  • Resolve project issues, change orders, and delays in collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Ensure all construction field documents are up to date, and that materials and workmanship comply with contract documents, approved submittals, and owner requirements. Review and approve as-built conditions and changes.
  • Review detailed daily reports and timesheets documenting all activity at the project.
  • Work closely with the Superintendent regarding materials and equipment at the project site, including field purchasing and delivery documentation.
  • Join and participate with regular project meetings with Subcontractors, Owners, Architects, and Engineers, in conjunction with the Superintendent.


Qualifications & Skills

  • Two or four year degree in construction, architecture, or engineering field is preferred.
  • Other degrees, training, trade school, or equivalent verifiable work in steel construction will be considered.
  • Previous experience successfully supervising teams and subcontractors on the steel construction sites.
  • Must be willing to travel to projects within the Porter Steel client base.
  • Should possess thorough knowledge of all aspects of commercial steel construction (technology, equipment, methods, engineering, cost control, subcontracting, safety code requirements, etc.).
  • Should have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as contracts, drawings, specifications, safety rules, installation, and operating instructions, etc.
  • Prior experience performing work in structural steel and erection.
  • Strong understanding of steel erection methods, AISC standards, and OSHA requirements.
  • Five (5) years of PM experience in structural steel is required.
