What can you expect?
As the Health & Safety Specialist, you will work onsite in Tacoma, WA and will be responsible for ensuring the safety and health of employees through the development, implementation, and enforcement of the company's safety programs. You will also be responsible for implementing applicable environmental permitting programs, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with all relevant safety regulations, including OSHA, MSHA, EPA, WAC, and EM385-1-1. You will drive safety in operations alongside project managers, develop and implement company health and safety programs, conduct safety audits, lead investigations, and contribute to the development and establishment of a company-wide safety culture and goals. Your role is crucial in demonstrating our core values and ensuring that we create the safest, most highly trained, and educated workforce possible.

This position has no direct supervision responsibilities but may serve as a coach / mentor for all field employees.

What can you expect?
As the Health & Safety Specialist, you will work onsite in Tacoma, WA and will be responsible for ensuring the safety and health of employees through the development, implementation, and enforcement of the company's safety programs. You will also be responsible for implementing applicable environmental permitting programs, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with all relevant safety regulations, including OSHA, MSHA, EPA, WAC, and EM385-1-1. How will you do it?
- Maintain effective communication between field crews and senior management by serving as the safety liaison to support safety initiatives and resolve field-level concerns.
- Develop and distribute weekly toolbox talks to reinforce safety awareness and promote ongoing safety education among field crews.
- Leverage professional expertise to coach managers, leaders, and employees to drive ongoing evaluation and continuous improvement of the company’s safety culture.
- Develop, coordinate, and implement overall project-specific safety documents.
- Track and follow up with safety-related asset maintenance requests on Salus.
- Assist in creating safety-related forms and perform daily reviews of submitted forms to ensure accuracy and compliance with company standards.
- Assist in monitoring and oversight of safety training and education.
- Lead near-miss and incident investigations to identify root causes, support the development of corrective actions, and monitor the completion of corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Enforce corporate and project-specific safety and health programs as well as federal, state, and local safety standards.
- Coordinate with and maintain professional relationships with OSHA and WISHA - Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act representatives to ensure regulatory compliance and effective communication.
- Conduct daily on-site safety walks with field crews to identify hazards, reinforce safe work practices, and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Develop and maintain a system to track and inventory small tools & consumables.
- Assist with warranty repairs and rigging recertifications.
- Conduct safety orientation with all new hires.
- Assist Safety Manager in the development of the Company safety program.
- Implement EM 385-1-1 requirements when applicable.
- Enforce all safety procedures and adherence to the corporate safety plan to minimize our exposure and risk on projects.
- Oversee safety and occupational health management, surveillance, inspections, and safety enforcement at project sites.
- Review current safety legislation to determine necessary changes.
- Ensure subcontractor compliance with safety and health requirements.
- Maintain records of job personnel safety training.
- Travel to job sites up to 75% of the time.
- Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Perform other duties as directed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Provide leadership to develop processes and programs to strengthen and enhance company safety leadership.
- Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, rules, regulations, and standards for employee health and safety and the ability to implement them in the workplace.
- Strong understanding and working knowledge of EM385-1-1.
- Advanced knowledge of standard safety equipment used in construction occupations.
- In-depth understanding of construction, architectural, and building industry-standard operating practices/procedures.
- Ability to exercise confidentiality when dealing with sensitive and confidential issues and situations.
- Possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, regulations, reports, advisories, and other technical documents and manuals.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to demonstrate independent supervisory planning, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work independently.
- Work requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, public, professional colleagues, and other governmental agencies.
- Ability to conduct employee safety training.
- Ability to develop, organize, and manage procedural systems and associated scheduling.
- Ability to comply with and enforce standard policies and procedures.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ability to travel to job sites.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Five (5) years of continuous safety experience in Construction, or general industry, managing safety programs or processes, and conducting hazard analysis and developing controls.
- A 30-hour OSHA construction safety class or equivalent within the last 5 years is required, or the ability to attend a class upon hire.
- Ability to obtain and maintain access to secure military installations.
- Valid state driver’s license and qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of the Tunista Construction’s Driving Policy.
- Ability to pass drug driving and background screening.
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or another related field preferred.
- Working knowledge of EM 385-1-1 safety standards; prior experience applying these standards on federal or military projects preferred.
- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Construction Quality Management (CQM) certification preferred.
- Certified Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification and/ or other accredited certifications relating to safety strongly preferred.
