Position Overview

CASE is seeking an Aquaculture and Marine Fish and Shellfish Biology Technician to support NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center in advancing sustainable aquaculture and the conservation of wild marine populations. This role focuses on the culture, propagation, and husbandry of marine fish and shellfish, and the operation of complex life support systems at NOAA’s Manchester Research Station (Port Orchard, WA).

In this role, youwill contribute directly to NOAA’s mission by applying knowledge gained from cultured species to inform the management of wild populations, and by supporting research used by commercial and NGO partners to optimize aquaculture operations. This position demands hands-on technical skills in animal husbandry, life support system maintenance, and live feed production, along with meticulous data collection to support NOAA’s scientific objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Life Support Systems: Build, plumb, maintain, and repair recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), flow-through tank systems, and net-pen systems for egg, larval, juvenile, and adult marine fish and shellfish.
  • Animal Husbandry: Perform daily care, cleaning, and disinfection of tanks, incubators, silos, and plumbing; maintain nets and feed containers on net-pens.
  • Live Feeds: Produce and feed live feeds (rotifers, artemia, algae) to larvae; prepare and deliver diets to adult fish and shellfish.
  • Data Collection: Tag fish, assess growth, record spawning/rearing metrics, and log daily/weekly/monthly water quality and system parameters.
  • Reporting: Maintain detailed monthly logbooks and progress reports documenting tasks, test results, repairs, maintenance, and any notable changes in cultured species.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Fisheries, Biology, Zoology, Environmental Studies, Aquaculture, or related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in fish and/or shellfish culture and husbandry.
  • Knowledge of marine aquaculture life support systems and aquatic animal care standards.
  • Experience with live feed production for marine species (rotifers, artemia, algae).
  • Knowledge of fish and shellfish spawning, egg incubation, and larval rearing.
  • Plumbing skills related to aquaculture systems.
