Position Overview

CASE is seeking an Researcher to support NOAA’s Ecosystem Fisheries Science (EFS) Division in monitoring environmental biotoxins and assessing their impacts on marine ecosystems, protected species, and fisheries. This position contributes directly to NOAA’s objectives under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), Fisheries Ecosystem-Based Management, and science and technology advancement.

In this role, you will collect, process, and analyze environmental and tissue samples, maintain laboratory operations, and manage data critical to understanding toxin pathways through marine food webs and mitigating risks to seafood safety and wildlife health.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sample Collection & Analysis: Collect tissue and environmental samples in the lab, field, and during multiple research cruises; prepare and analyze samples for biotoxin quantification.
  • Data Management: Record and maintain metadata and assay results; perform data entry and quality checks; update master spreadsheets and databases weekly.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate with NOAA scientists for sample collection, shipment, and cruise logistics; contribute to reports, manuscripts, and research documentation.
  • Laboratory Maintenance: Maintain supply inventory, track chemical use, perform routine equipment upkeep, and ensure compliance with chemical hygiene and safety protocols.
  • Documentation: Maintain a laboratory notebook with protocols, procedures, and raw data; manage shared drives for research data and cruise summaries.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Marine Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of relevant laboratory and/or field research experience.
  • Proficiency in data management and spreadsheet/database tools.
  • Ability to participate in research cruises and work in varied environmental conditions.
  • Experience with marine biotoxin analysis techniques.
  • Knowledge of seafood safety, environmental contaminant monitoring, or marine ecology.
  • Familiarity with NOAA research operations and laboratory safety standards.
