Position Summary

The Accountant plays a pivotal role in preparing and maintaining financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting and cooperative standards, and reviewing and reporting financial data for decision-making. This role involves tasks like preparing financial statements and other reports, accounts payable, reconciling general ledger accounts, preparing tax forms, and assisting with financial month-close processes and annual reporting requirements.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Accounts Payable

  • Determine proper General Ledger (GL) account coding for vendor invoices.
  • Maintain Accounts Payable (AP) vendor listing with updated W-9's.
  • Review company credit card transactions for accuracy, reconcile monthly statements, and prepare expense reports accordingly.
  • Reconcile vendor statements to AP ledger.
  • Obtain and maintain Certificates of Liability Insurance from vendors

 

General Ledger

  • Prepare and key general journal entries.
  • Perform account reconciliations for balance sheet accounts.
  • Assist with budget information and data entry.
  • Assist in the preparation of audit work papers for annual audit.
  • Prepare and develop forms and reports

 

Recording and Reporting

  • Reconcile monthly employee benefits with insurance statements.
  • Prepare and submit invoices to directors, retirees, and employees for monthly insurance premiums.
  • Collect, review, and report on all directors' expenses and hours.
  • Prepare annual IRS Form 1099-NEC for vendors.
  • Assist in the maintenance and accuracy of all records and reports including, but not limited to General Ledger Modules, Tax Reports, Bank Reconciliation, and Equipment/Continuing Property Records.
  • Assist in the preparation and collection of Damage Invoices

 

Payroll

  • Review time entry reports for accuracy.
  • Enter employee payroll information and process weekly payroll calculations.
  • Process and submit payments of all necessary payroll taxes.
  • Prepare and distribute annual IRS Form W-4 to employees.

 

Other Related Duties

  • Assist with quarterly cash drawer audits.
  • Assist with performing backup duties within the accounting department.
  • Recommend improvements that can be made in practices, methods, processes, and procedures within the area of this job responsibility.
  • Will properly use and keep in good condition all tools and equipment.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned or directed

 

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting

Desired

  • Four (4) years of accounting experience

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Knowledge of the electric utility industry and Rural Utilities Service (RUS) Accounting Principles and Programs.
  • Skill and proficiency in the use of computers, copiers, calculators, and Microsoft Office Platforms (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Skill in verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in analytical and critical thinking for analyzing complex problems, evaluating options, and developing resolutions.
  • Skill in time management, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize the completion of multiple, time-sensitive tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to develop and execute financial analysis, reconciliations, and strategies.
  • Ability to treat confidential information with sensitivity.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to exhibit a professional and courteous demeanor.
  • Ability to communicate in both oral and written form with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and observe Craighead Electric and empower policies, procedures, programs, and safety rules and regulations to effectively carry out job duties.

 

Special Requirements

  • Must have a valid Driver's License.
  • May be subject to 24-hour call out.
  • Ability to obtain Certificate of Completion of RUS Borrowers' Accounting course within two (2) years of employment.

 

Working Conditions and Mental or Physical Requirements

Must be able to remain in a stationary position continuously. Will frequently move inside or outside the office space. Position will continuously operate a computer and other office machinery and communicate with others. Occasionally lifts objects up to 20 pounds. Work is performed indoors.
