The Injury Prevention and Safety Officer is a hospital-based clinical role focused on proactively reducing workplace injuries and supporting a culture of safety and well-being. This highly visible, field-based position is responsible for identifying safety risks, planning and executing targeted interventions, and monitoring outcomes in collaboration with site leadership and interdisciplinary teams. This position reports to Hackensack Meridian Health's Team Health (Occupational Health) leadership with a dotted line to hospital Chief Nursing Officers and VP, Safety and Emergency Management. The role requires clinical expertise and direct engagement in the care environment to assess hazards, support training, implement post-incident action plans, and guide safety initiatives aligned with regulatory and organizational standards. The Partner serves as a key liaison between frontline staff and leadership, ensuring that injury prevention strategies are not only developed but effectively executed and sustained. This position combines operational execution with strategic partnership to drive meaningful, measurable improvements in team member safety.

Responsibilties

A day in the life of an Injury Prevention and Safety Officer at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Conduct workplace inspections to identify and document hazards, including risks related to workplace violence, unsafe lifting techniques, malfunctioning equipment, and hazardous substances, and ensure appropriate follow-up and tracking.
  • Collaborate with Security, Risk, Education, and Safety leaders to support and co-develop training programs (e.g., de-escalation, CPI, PPE use, hazard communication).
  • Investigate injuries and escalate cases per the Team Member Injury Serious Event Classification protocol.
  • Partner with leaders to implement Root Cause Analysis (RCA) action plans, ensuring alignment with injury prevention strategies.
  • Serve as the designated Team Health & Safety liaison during safety huddles, RCAs, and leadership safety rounds.
  • Monitor and report team member injury data, trends, and prevention strategies to the site Environment of Care Committee.
  • Actively participate in relevant committees as assigned, including Workplace Violence, Workplace Injury Prevention Committee, Crisis Management, CPI Review, and Safe Patient Handling.
  • Partner with frontline leaders to develop and implement targeted safety programs; coordinate follow-up and support for injured team members.
  • Work collaboratively with the Quality and Culture & Wellbeing teams to embed psychological safety and drive proactive interventions.
  • Stay current on industry best practices related to injury prevention; support implementation of evolving guidelines.
  • Lead or support post-incident debriefings and contribute to the development of standard operating procedures; monitor trends arising from debriefs and communicate insights to stakeholders.
  • Provide support for OSHA-related compliance programs.
  • Support safety-related project planning, execution, and follow-up.
  • Provide cross-coverage for the on-site Occupational Health office as needed, leveraging clinical skills to assist with team member care, assessments, and routine surveillance activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a healthcare setting
  • Experience in report writing and monitoring safety data and trends.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and facilitation skills.
  • Familiarity with industry regulations, quality standards, and occupational health and safety best practices
  • Solid computer skills, including Google Suite solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

Education, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Preferred

  • Master's Degree in a healthcare, safety, or related field
  • Experience in behavioral health settings
  • Familiarity with High Reliability Organization principles and framework
  • Background in developing or delivering team training/education.
  • Working knowledge of ACA/RCA processes and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Project management experience

Licenses And Certifications Required

  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.

Licenses And Certifications Preferred

  • National Association of Occupational Health Professionals.
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse or Certified Occupational Health Nurse - Specialist.
  • OSHA 10 Hour Training.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention.
  • BLS AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
  • Safe Patient Handling Program Certification
