Description

Job Summary

In this role, under the supervision of the Design Engineering Manager, you'll support technology development for power electronics at Astemo America. You'll be responsible for understanding customer system requirements and then working with a global engineering team to design/develop a product to meet customer needs. This would include electrical circuit design, component selection, circuit analysis, and testing of power electronics products.

This role work plan is hybrid structure (3 days on-site depending on public health situation)

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead and/or support development/localization activities for xEV traction inverter power electronics business in Astemo Americas.
  • Plans and manages activities for multiple projects to ensure goals or objectives are accomplished within a prescribed timeframe.
  • Receive, evaluate, and utilize customer engineering requirements and work with global team to provide optimum inverter design for each change/application.
  • Facilitate accurate & timely inverter program technical communication between OEM customers to the US / Japan design teams and related Astemo manufacturing sites.
  • Participate with Astemo US & Japan Design Engineering organizations in the original design / existing design improvements / performance validation / production launch, activities of xEV inverters for various automotive powertrain products applications.
  • Design work will involve (but not limited to) LV circuit, Gate drive circuit, DC-link Capacitor, Current senor, EMC filter, and Power module related design.
  • Prepare engineering documents to support product design (eBOM, RPL, IMDS, etc)
  • Provide as needed on-site support to the internal inverter manufacturing sites for various engineering duties during sample and mass production timing.
  • Support various types of product pricing, quoting, and cost investigation activities.
  • Prepare various types of technical data / information documents using industry standard PC based software programs (i.e.: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Support product validation testing, prototype build and test, and other engineering deliverables in the development phase of product life cycle.
  • Travel internationally may be required as business conditions dictate.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with embedded hardware design experience for automotive power electronics.
  • Knowledge in analysis, simulation, design, development, EMC issues, and testing of power electronics.
  • Knowledge in inverter overall design, familiar with the principle of inverter operating, gate drive and motor control circuit.
  • Understanding of electrified vehicle system and integration.
  • Experience interfacing with customers and/or suppliers to explain technical documents/drawings/information.
  • Experience with product quotation activities.
  • High level technical problem-solving skills (Six Sigma training preferred).
  • High level interpersonal skills to collaborate internally and externally.

Additionally, the ability to work independently with minimal direction is required as are strong/effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to travel and support activities and coordination at the global level is required.

The ideal candidate is preferred to have the following qualifications:

  • Possess a MSEE.
  • 7 yrs. of practical automotive design experience
  • Extensive knowledge of the entire inverter system(inverter HW, BSW, motor control), potential to become a system level engineer.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical engineering and ability to cooperate with mechanical engineer to proceed development or solve problems as a proposal-oriented engineer
  • Experience with Inverter & Motor integrated design/test.
  • Demonstrated accomplishments developing automotive inverters or similar devices
  • Highly Proficient with Mathcad, Zuken, LTspice or SIMetrix-SIMPLIS, and TwinBuilder.
  • Electrical design simulation experience(LV, HV, EMC, etc) for automotive inverters.
  • Highly Proficient with LV circuit test, gate drive test, power module related test, inverter level operating test.
  • Experience in correlation verification between simulation result and actual measurements.
  • Experience with quotation activities (eBOM estimation, etc) for new program.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects from concept through execution.
  • Fluent in both the English and Japanese languages.

Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A

Education: Possess at minimum a BSEE

Experience: Minimum 5 years practical work experience designing automotive power electronics analog and digital circuits, in particular, minimum 3 years product experience with traction inverter hardware design preferred.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Required to sit or stand for long periods of time. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Carrying equipment up and down stairs. Occasional overtime will be required.

Travel: Some domestic and international travel may be required up to 20%. Must have a valid driver’s license.
