The Licensing Associate will support strategic initiatives by conducting targeted market research and assisting in the development of external relationships with private sector representatives and stakeholders to advance the commercialization of UTA research and innovations. This key role focuses on identifying, nurturing, and managing partnerships across community, corporate, investor, government, academic, and nonprofit sectors. The ideal candidate is responsible for advancing a portfolio of university technologies into the commercial marketplace through the facilitation of licensing agreements or assisting in the formation of start-up companies to advance the technology to market.

The Licensing Associate will support strategic initiatives by conducting targeted market research and assisting in the development of external relationships with private sector representatives and stakeholders to advance the commercialization of UTA research and innovations. Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Cultivate and manage relationships with private sector partners and industry stakeholders to promote relationship development, including identifying strategic outreach opportunities and facilitating engagement between CETD and potential private sector collaborators.
- Conduct comprehensive market and industry research to assess commercialization potential, identify strategic opportunities aligned with CETD’s goals, and inform the development of intellectual property (IP) strategies.
- Regularly analyze market landscapes and emerging trends to support innovation planning and opportunity evaluation.
- Evaluate invention disclosures for patentability, market readiness, and licensing potential.
- Collaborate with inventors and stakeholders to understand technical innovations. Lead targeted marketing and outreach efforts to promote UTA technologies, including developing tailored commercialization materials, and initiating contact with potential licensees and industry partners.
- Collaborates with Principal Investigators (PI’s) to gain a deep understanding of their research interests and identify opportunities for external collaborations, funding, and determines commercial opportunities.
- Develops relationships with PIs pre-disclosure leading to the most efficient commercial pathway.
- Serves as the primary liaison for external stakeholders, and PIs alike.
- Responsible for supervising skilled and semi-skilled workers and personally participating in technical work of a highly specialized nature.
- Coordinate and execute business development follow-up meetings with private sector partners, investors, and licensees while managing ongoing relationship tracking and communications to ensure consistent stakeholder engagement and advancement of commercialization opportunities.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Two (2) years experience in Intellectual Property Law or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience in similar role.
- Demonstrates knowledge and experience in innovation management.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in intellectual property, technology transfer, and innovation management.
- Experience with patent law, licensing agreements, and university-based commercialization.
- To perform highly skilled and technical work involving the intake, evaluation, maintenance, and marketing of University Intellectual Property.
- Ability to work as part of a team and to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to manage multiple projects at once.
- Ability to clearly communicate to internal and external stakeholders the novelty of a technology and the market opportunity it represents.
