The Office of Strategic Communications is seeking to hire a Director for Citywide Signature Events who will be responsible for managing, programming, and coordinating DOT’s signature citywide events. These events include Summer Streets, Car-Free Earth Day, D a de Muertos, among other medium-to-large-scale citywide public events. The Director shall report to the Executive Director for Strategic Communications.

The Director will be in charge of overseeing the following responsibilities:

  • Execution and management of events such as Summer Streets, an annual car-free event held in July and August focused on fitness, outdoor recreation, and healthy living; and Car Free Earth Day, an annual car-free event held on the Saturday before or after Earth Day, focused on environmentalism and sustainability.
  • Coordinate monthly and weekly calls with all event stakeholders, including but not limited to: The Mayor’s Office of Citywide Signature Event Coordination and Management, city agencies, internal DOT units, event planning agencies, sponsors, programming partners, educational and cultural institutions, community leaders, and stakeholders, among other relevant event partners.
  • Coordinate with DOT’s Marketing team to develop designs and creatives for event signage, promotional materials, and other external marketing needs.
  • Assist in the coordination of temporary art installations at signature events working with DOT’s Art unit.
  • Coordinate with the DOT’s Special Events unit on the following:
  • Inspect event routes and locations.
  • Mitigation of event impact on the local community, construction projects, and other ongoing road repairs.
  • Perform walkthroughs before, during, and after all citywide signature event location(s) and route(s) with all relevant personnel to ensure routes are safe and free of all sidewalk and roadway

defects that fall under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Transportation.

  • Provide information and support to DOT’s Social Media unit to develop social media content. Planning and management of outreach materials, including: Community flyers, no parking signs, credential cards, event one-pagers, event descriptions, and development of site maps, among other related materials.
  • Coordinate and assist with DOT Creative Services and vendors for the photo and video documentation of citywide signature events.
  • Manage inventory of the agency’s event signage, supplies, equipment, and all other event assets.
  • Manage and train all event DOT volunteers.
  • Prepare and outline programming and event budgets for final review and approvals.
  • Manage seasonal staff including; interns, fellows, DOT volunteers, and paid event staff.
  • Coordinate the submission of all permits in accordance with city regulations, including but not limited to: SAPO, Parks, FDNY, NYPD, Buildings, Health Department, among other applicable permitting applications.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to internal operating units and external partners.
  • Other related tasks and responsibilities as delegated by the Executive Director of Strategic Communications and the Chief Communications Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

Word, Excel, general photo and video capabilities, experience reviewing and balancing budget, community engagement.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
