Purchasing Supervisor

The Purchasing Supervisor supervises daily procurement and purchasing operations. Implements the strategies to provide materials and services to meet organizational requirements for quality, volume, availability and pricing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Maintain relations with all other departments to keep purchasing personnel abreast of new product releases, quality trends and changes in the material input plan.
  • Responsible for proper flow down of all requirements to the supply base.
  • Work with accounts payable to ensure resolution and timely processing of vendor payments.
  • Responsible for monitoring and improving metrics related to inventory, cost, quality and delivery output of Operations, and utilize departmental metrics to drive improvement.
  • Identifies potential vendors / suppliers, gathers and analyzes information on them; recommends prospective vendors to top management
  • Prepares vendor contracts and negotiates terms with vendors
  • Maintains inventories of raw materials, parts, and supplies and maintains records
  • Periodically assesses inventories and compares with market activity; may recommend adjustment of the procurement plan to top management
  • Orders materials from approved suppliers
  • Reviews, analyzes receiving / inspection documentation; forwards receiving paperwork to Accounting for vendor payment
  • Maintains records of approved suppliers and periodically evaluates vendor performance (e.g., conformance with stated requirements, trends, anomalies)
  • With the Quality Manager, determines the disposition of nonconforming materials
  • Supervises all Buyers and support staff.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Position Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • College or university degree or program certificate; five years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong interpersonal, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in multiple Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of business systems, including MRP, required.
  • Familiarity with price indices in the marketplace.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to write reports and business correspondence, for both internal and external distribution.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with individuals or groups.
  • Ability to evaluate and analyze complex quotes and proposals.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.



Pay Transparency

The salary information is a general guideline only. A wide range of factors are considered when extending an offer, such as job-related knowledge and skills, qualifications, education/training, key skills as well as market and business considerations. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.

California pay range

$85,000—$105,000 USD
