Job Overview

SMSI Group is seeking an experienced Project Engineer with a strong background in the construction industry to support our growing portfolio of commercial, industrial, and refrigeration projects. In this role, you will collaborate, design, and coordinate HVAC, plumbing, and ammonia refrigeration systems, ensuring safety, compliance, and efficiency.

This is a hands-on position where you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, support project execution from design through construction, and play a key role in delivering high-quality solutions for industries including food & beverage production/processing, pharmaceuticals production/packaging, cold storage, and industrial construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems for industrial construction projects.
  • Provide engineering design and technical support for industrial ammonia refrigeration systems, ensuring regulatory compliance and energy efficiency.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, drawings, and specifications.
  • Review RFIs, contractor submittals, and technical project documents.
  • Collaborate with architects, civil/electrical engineers, and project managers to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Coordinate with CAD technicians and field staff to provide design and construction support.
  • Conduct site inspections and support during construction phases.
  • Ensure all mechanical designs and installations meet applicable building codes and standards.
  • Assist with project planning, budgeting, and scheduling.
  • Support sales with quoting, design development, and customer interactions.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support company and project success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master's preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering within the construction industry.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial ammonia refrigeration systems is highly desired.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and mechanical design software.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, codes, and construction processes.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • This position is safety sensitive
