Position Purpose

The Paralegal I position is responsible for providing comprehensive legal support to assigned attorneys by drafting, editing, and proofreading legal documents, conducting legal research, managing case files, and ensuring compliance with filing deadlines. The role requires collaboration with legal teams, preparation of witnesses, and the organization of exhibits and documents to support legal proceedings. This position plays a crucial part in maintaining the efficiency and effectiveness of legal operations within the agency. Additionally, the Paralegal I will contribute to the overall success of the legal department by performing various administrative duties as assigned by the General Counsel or Deputy General Counsels.

Principal Activities May Include

  • Drafts, edits, and proofreads complex legal papers and correspondence.
  • Performs legal research using online databases and other sources; analyzes and summarizes research.
  • Contacts, schedules, and assists with the preparation of witnesses; assists in securing exhibits and other relevant documentation.
  • Works to ensure that case files are properly organized and complete.
  • Files documents in state and federal court, including e-filing; responsible for tracking and ensuring that all filing and response deadlines are met.
  • Performs specialized duties in support of assigned attorneys' responsibilities.
  • Provides administrative support for assigned attorneys, including handling incoming mail, scheduling meetings, and typing and editing documents
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by General Counsel or Deputy General Counsels.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Competencies

The Paralegal I role requires strong legal knowledge, particularly in case management, legal research, and document preparation, along with the ability to navigate state and federal court procedures. It also demands excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for managing case files, filing deadlines, and supporting attorneys with complex tasks. The Korn Ferry competencies that best align with this position are Manages Complexity, which emphasizes handling legal processes and information accurately, and Ensures Accountability, critical for meeting strict legal deadlines and upholding the integrity of legal work.

Education And/or Experience

  • An associate degree in Paralegal Studies, Legal Studies, or a related field and 1 year of paralegal or legal assistant experience OR
  • A Certified Paralegal Certification approved by a national association or American Bar Association (ABA) approved program plus 2 years of experience as a paralegal or a legal assistant OR
  • A high school diploma or equivalent education plus 3 years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant.

Preference May Be Given To Candidates With

  • Certifications in any of the following areas: Certified Paralegal (CP) or Advanced Certified Paralegal (ACP), Paralegal certification
  • Licenses in legal specialization
  • Experience with legal case management software
  • Familiarity with e-filing systems
  • Exhibited proficiency in navigating interpersonal dynamics.
  • Extensive litigation experience as a paralegal or legal assistant
  • Experience drafting and filing legal documents
  • Medicaid or other healthcare experience
  • Notary Public license

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain sitting for prolonged periods at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to move or lift up to 15 pounds at various times.

Work Environment

The office work environment includes regular exposure to general office equipment such as computer equipment, phones, and copy machines.
