Position Overview
Under the general supervision of the Manager of the Southern Boone County Public Library, this position has primary responsibility to guide patrons both in the selection of reading materials and information resources, carry through the functions related to borrowing, reserving and returning of library materials and plan and present programs.
Schedule
Part-time, non-exempt position (average of 22 hours a week): M 11-4, 5-8; TH 9-12; F 9-2; every other Saturday (9-5 with a lunch break) and Sunday (1-5).

Minimum Job Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Job Requirements
Previous library experience preferred. 48 hours minimum college credit, and one-year customer service experience preferred. Experience can be substituted for college credit.

- Technology - Demonstrate proven computer literacy with adequate keyboarding skills. Understand basic email functions including opening, creating and sending messages. Familiar with internet searching, social media and blogs. Proficiency with library automation system/online catalog and reference databases.
- Circulation responsibilities: checks in and out library materials, enters library card information into the computer, updates patron files, shelves and circulates library materials.
- Reference responsibilities: interview patrons to determine needs and locate appropriate materials; provides reference and information services using print materials, reference databases, and/or Internet access; delivers information to patrons using appropriate methods such as in person, telephone, email, etc.
- Provide a continuum of library service to the library user by consulting with other staff to pool knowledge for the benefit of the user and by assisting other staff in providing services and programs for patrons.
- Assist patrons in the use of the library’s automation system, public computers, copiers, Internet-based information and databases, and other computerized systems.
- Develop competence and skills in the usage of the automation system in accessing library collections and recognizing popular titles and authors in order to provide readers advisory services.
- Participate in in-service training opportunities and may participate in staff planning committees.
- May plan and present programs for all ages, including hosting programs
- May maintain special files at the request of the supervisor.
- May provide clerical assistance as needed within the department, such as patron use statistics.
- Maintain public bulletin boards, keeping information appropriate, orderly, and timely.
- Selection and collection responsibilities: identifies damaged materials, shelf read, check lists against holdings in the computer in consultation with the manager.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
