About The Role
Purple Unicorn, on behalf of The Mandel JCC of the Palm Beaches is seeking an energetic and organized Children & Camp Assistant Director to lead, mentor, and inspire staff while creating meaningful experiences for 3rd–5th grade students. This role balances hands-on program leadership with behind-the-scenes logistics, scheduling, and operations.
You’ll be a trusted partner for parents, a mentor to staff, and a peer leader alongside another Assistant Director. If you thrive on both creativity and organization, and you’re passionate about working with children in a diverse and inclusive community, this position is for you.
Key Responsibilities
As the Assistant Director, you’ll design and deliver engaging programs for 3rd–5th graders, including aftercare, weekend drop-off activities, field trips, and Camp Shalom summer camp. You’ll manage both the fun and the functional—ensuring memorable experiences for kids and smooth operations for families and staff.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and support a team of college-aged staff and creative counselors (arts & crafts, cooking, etc.)
- Oversee programs for 200 students in summer (avg.) and 100 during the school year (avg.)
- Serve as parent partner and trusted communicator, including during emergencies
- Own key areas such as:
- Hiring: materials and processes
- Transportation: bus schedules, processes, safety, and communications
- Field Trips: coordination, preparation, and safety
- Scheduling: camp, aftercare, and events
- Camp Registration: oversight of entire process
- Events: full life-cycle planning and execution
- Promotions: event and group marketing
As the Assistant Director, you’ll design and deliver engaging programs for 3rd–5th graders, including aftercare, weekend drop-off activities, field trips, and Camp Shalom summer camp. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Plan, implement, and evaluate age-appropriate programs and activities
- Build strong, positive relationships with children and families to foster engagement
- Maintain clear and proactive communication with parents/guardians
- Provide guidance, role modeling, and support to campers
- Complete required paperwork (attendance, incident reports, evaluations)
- Collaborate with staff across departments to share resources and streamline logistics
- Uphold safety standards and organizational policies at all times
- Take on leadership roles in Camp Shalom (summer) and Beyond the Bell (aftercare program)
- Perform other duties as assigned

- Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs and engage in physical activities (bending, stretching, squatting, etc.)
- Comfort with extended time at a computer/desk as well as outdoor supervision in varying weather conditions
- Ability to supervise children and staff while ensuring a safe environment
- Flexibility to attend events, evenings, and weekends as needed
