Healthy Minds Policy Initiative is a non-profit, non-partisan policy organization that publishes research and analysis on mental health and substance use issues in Oklahoma, advocates for policy solutions that increase Oklahomans’ access to care, and convenes community partners to build stronger local mental health systems. The organization was founded in 2019 by The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation and has offices and staff members in Tulsa and Oklahoma City.
Job Purpose
The communications specialist is a skilled communicator and writer who provides tactical support to advance Healthy Minds’ strategic priorities. This position works as part of the organizational advancement team to develop and implement communications strategies across paid, earned, social, and owned media.
The communications specialist will also be Healthy Minds’ primary graphic designer, responsible for creating a variety of digital and printed materials that demonstrate the importance and impact of the organization’s work.
The ideal candidate is adept at tailoring information for a range of audiences, comfortable working with diverse populations, and can distill technical subject matter into simple, meaningful, and memorable prose.
This position reports to the senior communications manager, has no direct reports, and is full-time, non-exempt.

Responsibilities
- Produce original content for Healthy Minds, including blog posts, op-eds, and news releases.
- Edit policy papers, research reports, and other written materials for clarity, style, and tone.
- Lead content creation across communication channels, including Healthy Minds’ website, social media, and email newsletter.
- Create and design a variety of printed and digital materials, including reports, fact sheets, presentations, marketing collateral, proposals, and other visual assets.
- Work with other team members to produce and refine compelling data visualizations.
- As Healthy Minds’ primary media contact, respond to media requests and work with reporters to ensure accurate, responsible coverage of mental health issues.
- Track and report on key success metrics for communications activities.

Education, Experience, & Skills
- Two to three years of experience in public relations, marketing, or other communications functions required.
- Strong writing and editing skills required.
- Graphic design skills and knowledge of design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, Figma) required.
- Bachelor’s degree in a communications discipline (e.g., strategic communications, public relations, journalism, design) preferred.
- Experience in a nonprofit communications role is preferred.
- Experience managing social media accounts, both organic content and paid campaigns.
- Experience managing email marketing campaigns; familiarity with MailChimp a plus.
- Experience working in content management systems or managing websites.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience working with software solutions for organizational communication (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Asana, Basecamp, etc.) preferred.
- Passionate about improving mental health outcomes in Oklahoma.
- Self-motivated and results-oriented.
- Thrives when collaborating with diverse groups of internal and external partners.
- Curious and comfortable with a trial-and-error approach to problem solving.
- Adapts quickly and calmly to urgent situations and changing circumstances.
- Committed to continuous learning and professional development.
- Ability to work a hybrid schedule out of an Oklahoma City or Tulsa office.
- A hybrid work schedule will require internet access.
- Ability to work in an office environment and sit for extended periods of time.
