Job Summary
- Seasonal/Variable Position - This position must work less than 1000 hours in a calendar year.*
Job Duties
- Verify identification of horse racing animals by citing registration certificates, tattoos, markings, dimples, cowlicks, and other characteristics. Mark all identification of horses appearing on racing program for the day to properly identify when brought to paddock area just immediately prior to racing.
- Prepare statistical reports, charge, or correspondence in connection with positive and definite identification and verification of horse-racing animals. Maintain central record-keeping system for identification of racing horses. Identify those equine that need Lasix on any given day and list for each available vet.
- Assist veterinarian investigations and inspections of paddock area stall, stables, etc., for sanitary conditions and report results. Assist track veterinarian in monitoring procedures of tattooing horses at each track by tattooing technicians to ensure each horse tattooed is required by Arizona Racing Commission rules and regulations. Keep track veterinarian informed or make recommendations concerning any change and identification procedures of horse racing animals.
- Directly responsible for enforcement of Arizona Racing Commission rules and regulations in the paddock area. Tag all equine upon stewards' or veterinarians' request needing to go to the test barn area. May be tasked to assist the stewards or veterinarians in the collecting of samples in the test barn area.
- Assist owners, trainers, and breeders in preparing or processing registration certificate or corrections.
- Maintain general alertness for procedures and paddock area that would limit the Department's ability to supervise and regulate operations to protect the state from illegal racing operations. Timely verification and identification of all horses and animals to promote public confidence in violation-free racing.
- Maintain liaison with the national associations Thoroughbred protective Bureau, American Quarter Horse Association, tattooing technicians, etc. on identification manners.

- How to identify horse racing animals by the use of national association registration documents
- Investigative techniques, procedures, and ability to prepare accurate records
- How to handle and control excitable horse racing animals
- Different breeds and racing equipment used in horse racing
- Horsemanship
- Identifying horses by registration certificates, markings, tattoo, calyx, dimples and other characteristics
- Proper handling of horse-racing animals
- Interpretation of track procedures
- Continuity of evidence
- Observation and detecting violations of rules and regulations in paddock area
- Presenting a pleasant impression at all times in performing duties and conducting self in a courteous and temperate fashion
- Organizing priorities to accomplish multitude of activities
- Making efficient judgments
- Developing reports
- Handle detailed work accurately and in a timely manner
- Adapt to changing assignments and priorities
- Respond to inquiries with tact, diplomacy, and appropriate timely information
- Work as a team player within several divisions
- Organize, prioritize and perform multiple tasks on a daily basis

- Follow verbal and written instructions and complete assigned tasks accurately
- Work independently with minimal supervision
- Certified Veterinary Technician
- High School Diploma
Valid AZ Drivers License.
