Position Summary

The Corporate Attorney is a key member of the Corporate Legal team, responsible for providing legal counsel on matters related to personal automobile insurance. This role focuses on regulatory compliance, product design, producer licensing, market conduct examinations, and corporate governance.

The attorney will work closely with internal stakeholders, including Product Development, Compliance, Government Affairs, and Executive Leadership, to ensure legal and regulatory alignment across business initiatives. The position also involves direct interaction with external regulatory agencies and industry bodies to manage filings, respond to inquiries, and support examinations.

The Corporate Attorney plays a critical role in shaping legal strategy, mitigating risk, and supporting the company’s operational and strategic goals within the insurance sector.

Duties

  • Provide legal guidance on personal auto insurance product development, filings, and regulatory strategy.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state insurance laws and regulations, including producer licensing requirements.
  • Collaborate with product, actuarial, claims and compliance teams to ensure new and existing products meet legal and regulatory standards.
  • Draft and review policy language, endorsements, disclosures, and other customer-facing documents.
  • Provide legal support for market conduct exams, including coordination of responses and remediation efforts.
  • Advise on producer licensing issues, including onboarding, renewals, and compliance with state-specific requirements.
  • Support corporate governance initiatives, including board reporting, policy development, and legal oversight of governance frameworks.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of corporate compliance policies and training programs.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating various commercial contracts and agreements and regulatory filings as needed.
  • Managing and mitigating legal risks by designing and implementing company policies and procedures.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting the insurance industry and assess their impact on business operations.

Skill And Educational Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 3–10 years of legal experience, preferably in insurance law, regulatory compliance, or corporate governance.
  • Strong understanding of personal auto insurance products and state regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of corporate governance practices, including board operations and policy development.
  • Experience with producer licensing, market conduct exams, and corporate governance.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts clearly to non-legal stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment.
  • The ability to communicate complex legal issues and risks in terms that non-legal colleagues can understand.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative mindset with experience working cross-functionally across legal, compliance, product, and executive teams.

Working Conditions:

This is a position based in a professional office environment or remote/hybrid setting, depending on company policy and needs.

Standard business hours apply, with occasional extended hours required to meet project deadlines or attend leadership meetings.

Frequent use of a computer, phone system, and claims management software.

Must be comfortable navigating multiple systems and screens simultaneously.

Requires clear, professional verbal communication and active listening skills.

Fast-paced environment with performance metrics.

Must be able to manage time effectively and prioritize tasks.

Frequent collaboration with cross-functional teams across time zones requiring flexibility in scheduling.

May require occasional travel (up to 10–15%) to company offices, vendor sites, or industry conferences.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer (up to 8 hours per day) while working on a desk computer.

Frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling documents.

Ability to use standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and video conferencing tools.

Must be able to read and interpret documents, emails, and computer screens.

Extended screen time is required.

Must be able to hear and speak clearly on the phone for extended periods.

Use of a headset is common and may be required.

Minimal physical movement required; occasional walking or standing may be needed.

Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally (e.g., for transporting laptops or presentation materials).
