The Idaho State Department of Agriculture is currently recruiting for a Laboratory Technician in the Animal Health Laboratory located in Boise.

The successful candidate must pass and obtain certification in Brucella testing.

The successful candidate will perform specialized and routine standardized biological laboratory extractions and analyses on a variety of matrices. Duties may involve working with toxic, volatile, corrosive chemicals, and carcinogenic substances. An initial blood draw for antibody titer checks will be required, additional blood draws may be required. This position works from approximately 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; however, due to the workload the schedule may vary.

The following are examples of duties performed for the current opening in the Animal Health Lab at the Idaho State Department of Agriculture:

  • Prepares bovine or other animal blood samples for testing.
  • Assists in testing blood and milk samples for brucellosis (requires certification).
  • Assists in routine examination of samples (may require certification).
  • Assists in mail distribution internally and mailing packages from labs.
  • Result entry.
  • Assists in lab cleaning.
  • Assists in other microbiology, serology, virology, and molecular labs.

Minimum Qualifications

These qualifications are mandatory requirements

Good knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, materials, and procedures, and the fundamental laboratory methods relating to chemistry or biology.

Experience

  • Performing standardized laboratory tests according to prescribed procedures.
  • Calculating and recording test results.
  • Maintaining a clean, sterile, and safe laboratory environment.

Both areas of the minimum qualifications can be typically gained by at least eight semester college credits in chemistry, microbiology, or biology, with a laboratory as part of the course OR at least one year of experience (within the last fifteen years), with in-service training, as laboratory assistant in a certified or research laboratory using standard laboratory equipment to include autoclave, centrifuge, and scales.

  • Additional laboratory education and/or experience
  • Good organizational skills to work with large sample volumes.
  • Typically gained by at least one year of lab experience working with large sample volumes.
  • Basic computer skills for ID entry and report distribution.
  • This experience is typically gained with at least one year of work experience using Word, Excel, Google,

Temporary appointments from this announcement, serving at least one thousand forty (1,040) hours of continuous service, may be hired as an entrance probationary employee without further examination for the same classification and location as announced.
