Job Title: Association Sports Director

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Associate Vice President of Membership & Programs, the Association Sports Director is responsible for overseeing and managing the sports programs and activities across the YMCA association. This role involves planning, organizing, and implementing a variety of sports leagues, clinics, tournaments, PE/afterschool programs, camps, and events for participants of all ages. The Association Sports Director will collaborate with staff, volunteers, and community partners to ensure the smooth operation and continued growth of all sports programs, while upholding the YMCA's mission and core values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead association-wide sports initiatives through active engagement with branch and association leadership.
  • Plan, develop, and oversee a comprehensive sports program portfolio in alignment with YMCA values and community needs.
  • Develop and manage program budgets, ensuring cost-effective operations and maximum community impact.
  • Write, recommend, and implement curriculum for all in-branch and off-site program locations.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise staff across multiple locations and program types (youth and adult sports, clinics, camps, PE, afterschool).
  • Strategize to attract and retain participants for sports programs and events.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and safety guidelines.
  • Partner with the Marketing Department to promote programs and increase community participation.
  • Collect and analyze data to inform program improvements and respond to community needs.
  • Evaluate and adapt program offerings based on trends, feedback, and changing demands.

Vendor & Volunteer Relations

  • Manage relationships with vendors and a large network of volunteers, including a dedicated volunteer sports committee.
  • Foster community engagement and collaboration across diverse groups to support program success.

Program & Event Facilitation

  • Lead high-level coaches' meetings and training sessions throughout the year using strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of multiple sports programs simultaneously - from concept to completion.

Operational & Technical Expertise

  • Utilize a variety of software platforms for timekeeping, scheduling, recruitment, budgeting, billing, and customer relationship management.
  • Maintain accountability for program budgets and ensure efficient allocation of resources.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Coordinate efforts across internal departments and external partners, including the City of St. Petersburg, Pinellas County Schools, local organizations, and community leaders.
  • Communicate effectively across multiple channels to ensure program alignment, clarity, and collaboration.

Multi-Site & Multi-Program Oversight

  • Lead and support operations across multiple sites and a diverse portfolio of programs.
  • Manage five youth sports seasons annually, plus year-round youth clinics, adult leagues, daily member sports activities, summer and holiday sports camps, and physical education programs.

Community & School Engagement

  • Facilitate PE programs for local private schools and homeschool groups.
  • Lead after-school sports programs in partnership with Pinellas County Schools and other community-based initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Human Services, Social Services, Recreation, Business, or equivalent experience.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills in staff and volunteer management.
  • Experience in coaching and organizing sports programs.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Certifications in CPR/AED and First Aid (within 90 days of hire).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse populations and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Pay & Perks
