A Brief Overview
The Peptide Competence Center (PCC) leads peptide process development and life cycle management for Bachem Americas, while strengthening expertise in manufacturing, NCE development, and collaboration with global Bachem sites. The Research Scientist supports customer-driven projects, drives innovation in peptide synthesis and purification, and implements technologies to enhance GMP manufacturing efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Responsibilities also include optimizing automated development equipment and sharing advanced peptide chemistry knowledge with production and development teams. This position will sit in either Torrance, CA or Vista, CA.
What You Will Do
Base Annual Salary Range: $88,880 to $111,100
Placement of new hires in these wage ranges is based on several factors including education, skill sets, experience, and training.

What You Will Do
- Execute peptide API projects, including research, validation, troubleshooting, and process optimization.
- Take ownership of assigned tasks, ensuring timely, high-quality, and cost-effective execution.
- Provide regular updates and communicate project progress to stakeholders.
- Manage and maintain production equipment and infrastructure, including preventive maintenance.
- Plan and allocate resources to ensure efficient execution of service orders and optimal use of personnel and equipment.
- Identify and implement improvements in safety, regulatory compliance, and process efficiency.
- Independently develop, optimize, and troubleshoot peptide chemistry processes.
- Contribute to broader business process improvements to enhance quality, efficiency, and speed.
- Ensure compliance with applicable directives, regulations, and internal procedures.
- Evaluate, recommend, and implement new technologies and equipment for peptide synthesis and purification.
- Conduct research in peptide chemistry, including solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), purification, and isolation.
- Train and coach team members in NCE life cycle management approaches in accordance with the company's CMC concept and in advanced peptide chemistry-related topics.
- PhD in Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry (preferred) or
- Master's Degree in Organic Chemistry or Biochemistry with at least 3 years’ experience
- More than 3 years of hands-on experience in small-scale/large-scale chemical synthesis and their relevant purification such as RP-HPLC and ion exchange HPLC.
- Strong hands-on solution and solid-phase synthesis experience and analytical skills with ability to solve chemical and process problems.
- Experience in different analytical and preparative HPLC techniques specifically RP-HPLC and Ion exchange
- Broad understanding of new trends and emerging technologies in the field of Organic Chemistry, specifically peptide chemistry
- Ability to work independently to design new experiments to probe a process to generate fundamental mechanistic understanding of a chemical reaction, and ability to interpret results obtained.
- In depth understanding of MS spectroscopy as applied to peptide analysis
- Understanding of general NMR principle (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 2D-NMR) and NMR data interpretation
- Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to provide periodic written updates of technical findings to senior management, and present research findings to senior executives.
- Support patent filings with proper documentation and interactions with patent counsels.
- Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Self-starter, ability to effectively organize, multitask, and work in a fast-paced, deadline driven work environment.
- High competence in new trends and emerging technologies in the field of peptide chemistry and Organic Chemistry
