Job Summary

Responsible for the technical and/or staff performance of their section. Monitors Quality Control,

proficiency and competency testing. Participate as effective team member in section

management relative to communications, operations, finances and personnel as appropriate.

Assist the Manager and/or Director and appropriate Medical Director(s) in meeting customer

expectations, patient care, technical performance, quality and finances.

Essential Functions

  • Technical
  • Serves as a technical resource for testing sites in area or discipline(s).
  • Provide technical assistance in the development of new assays or procedures as assigned.

Interpret data with the relevant pathologist/medical director and/or supervisor or manager.

  • Researches and resolves problems and/or assists others in resolving problems appropriately.
  • Consult with pathologists, supervisors or managers regarding difficult analyses, abnormal

findings or conflicting results.

  • Ensure maintenance on instruments is performed as needed or appropriate.
  • Participate in developing/implementing computer system improvements for existing and new

computer systems. Work with I.S. to ensure computer file maintenance for relevant assays is

correct and up to date.

  • Maintain and update department procedure manuals as needed or appropriate. Develop new

procedures and special reports as needed.

  • Be competent to perform appropriate tests in the section. Perform testing as required by

workload or staffing.

  • Quality Assurance / Quality Control
  • Responsible for QC (including maintenance and temperature charts). Ensure that monthly

QC reports are prepared and submitted to the Pathologist or designee.

  • Assist in development, monitoring and reporting of Quality Assurance standards and

objectives.

  • Participate in QA programs to ensure that Quality standards are met. Continually evaluate the

needs and expectations of the customers and implement new quality processes to insure that these expectations are met or exceeded.

  • Serve as consultant for QA/QC problem situations; work to resolve situations as they occur

so that testing may continue in a timely manner.

  • May serve as a delegate to the Medical Director.
  • Compliance
  • Implement, maintain and document standard laboratory procedures to ensure quality test

results, and the safety and security of personnel and property. Ensure section compliance

with all regulatory agencies and inspections. Prepare for and host onsite inspections by

certification agencies including CAP, ASHI, AABB, JCAHO, etc.

  • Ensure proficiency tests are performed as scheduled, results are evaluated, and that corrective

(technical) action is performed as needed.

  • Training
  • Establish, maintain and document appropriate training and competency programs to insure

that all employees are trained and understand the expectations of the section.

  • Ensure that new hires, students, residents, and fellows are trained appropriately in the area(s)

of technical specialty as needed or appropriate.

  • Budgeting / Inventory Control
  • Provide appropriate inventory control. Review invoices and forward for approval as

appropriate.

  • Participate in preparing and meeting budgets for personnel, supplies and capital equipment

needed for the section. Assist with cost accounting of supplies and labor for specific tests

performed in the section.

  • Organizational / Employee Development
  • Supervise and evaluate the technical work of techs and students and other staff working in

the section.

  • Communicate regularly with employees regarding their performance.
  • Prepare and/or perform employee performance evaluations and disciplinary actions with staff

following TriCore policies.

  • Review and prioritize workload and work to match staffing to meet workload.

Prepare/oversee the preparation of staff work schedules.

  • Participate in hiring decisions, including job postings, reviewing applications and

interviewing applicants.

  • Actively solicit staff input and feedback. Listen with the purpose of understanding

employee concerns, questions, ideas and opinions.

  • Actively support and implement department procedures, polices and strategies to support

the corporate vision, values and strategic plans.

  • Assist with marketing of the section(s)’ services through client contact, providing

information for marketing brochures, and tours to community groups as appropriate.

  • Communicate with department management team and staff to ensure appropriate sharing

of information.

MINIMUM EDUCATION

  • Bachelor Degree in a relevant field.

Minimum Experience

  • Four years of clinical lab experience.

Other Requirements

  • ASCP Technologist/Scientist certification or equivalent.

Preferences

  • Specialty certification and/or training if available.
  • Prior supervisory and/or lead experience.

General Requirements

  • Handle special projects as needed or directed. Conduct R & D as appropriate.
  • Facilitate and/or participate in Quality Management Teams as needed or appropriate.
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of laboratory medicine through self study and

participation in continuing education programs. Attend a minimum 8 continuing

education programs per anniversary year with at least 3 of these being technical programs

and at least 1 outside of TriCore.

  • Attend department and supervisory meetings as scheduled.
  • Serve as "manager on call" as needed or directed.
  • Work closely with appropriate medical/scientific director(s) regarding decisions on

matters relating to patient care, technical performance, quality and finances. This may

include, but is not limited to, such matters as capital, methodology and budget. Also,

decisions on matters relating to key personnel.

  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Handles hazardous materials and wastes in accordance with safety procedures and

regulations. Specific training requirements are documented in TriCore’s Waste

Management Plan, SAF-011.
