Position Summary

This is a professional position providing peer recovery support in the Together We Rise program under the Families First Division. The Families First Division was created as a result of the Family First Prevention Services Act (FFPSA) which is focused on keeping children safely with their families to avoid the trauma that results when children are placed in out-of-home care. The Families First Division operates with the understanding that children do best in a strong family, and that children and their families do best with the support of their communities. To increase the number of children who can remain safely at home with their families, the law provided families with greater access to mental health services, substance use treatment, and/or improved parenting skills. The Families First Division ensures that families have time sensitive access to mental health, substance use treatment and supportive services focused on strengthening families and proactively supports those children at risk of child abuse, neglect and separation from their family. All Families First programming works together, alongside the parent/ caregiver to decrease the number of children entering the Child Welfare System by utilizing a solution-focused, family centered approach and evidenced based or research supported practices to assist families in meeting needs and goals while preventing further incidents of child abuse, neglect and abandonment. Staff in Together We Rise will work specifically with the parents/caregivers and the children who have come to the attention of the child protective investigation division of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, and who have been determined to be safe but at high or very high risk of future child abuse, and neglect. Together We Rise (TWR) will work with all members of the family with a team-based approach in a supportive, empowering and respectful manner to assist the family with creating safe and stable parenting practices to facilitate long-term behavior change that will ensure that children are safe in their home.

The Together We Rise (TWR) Peer Mentor will play an integral role of support, coaching and guidance for families at risk of becoming involved in the child welfare system in Pinellas County. The TWR Peer Mentor is assigned to work with parents with a substance abuse, mental health or co-occurring mental health & substance abuse concern and is responsible for guiding the family and serving as a system navigator who supports the parent in treatment/recovery. The TWR Peer Mentor will ensure that the peer services being delivered are individualized, recovery-focused and allow individuals the opportunity to learn how to manage their own recovery and advocacy process. The TWR Peer Mentor will be a subject matter expert through lived experience and will serve to enhance the development of natural supports, as well as coping and self-management skills. The TWR Peer Mentor will ensure that peer services emphasize personal safety, self-worth, confidence, and growth, connection to the community, boundary setting, planning, self-advocacy, personal fulfillment, and development of social supports, and effective communication. The TWR Peer Mentor focus services on emphasizing the acquisition; development; and expansion of rehabilitative skills needed to move forward in recovery. The TWR Peer will ensure collaboration with the other clinical service providers, such as the Behavioral Health Case Manager, therapist and/or a psychiatrist. If the parent/s are not engaged in these clinical services, the TWR Peer Mentor will notify the program supervisor/director and help provide education on these services and help to coordinate initiation, as clinically appropriate. If these services are recommended, but parent/s are not yet willing to engage, this should be documented in the service notes and the TWR Peer Mentor will be responsible for completing the documentation. This is a field position. The Peer Mentor is responsible for ensuring an annual client facing client care number of 1,410 hours annually.
