Job Overview: The Adult Education Supervisor implements education programming for adults served by the IRC’s Elizabeth resettlement office. They coordinate adult education programming, including English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), digital literacy, job readiness training (JRT), and cultural orientation (CO) classes. The supervisor oversees the onboarding and supervision of instructors, volunteer tutors, and adult education interns.

Major Responsibilities

Programmatic Leadership

  • Effectively manage the development, implementation, compliance, and completion of all adult education service grants and contracts.
  • Oversee planning, development, and implementation of IRC NJ’s office adult education classes, including coordination of class schedules, enrollment, and registration, pre-and post-testing,
  • Lead development of curriculum for ESOL, Digital Literacy, JRT, and CO classes.
  • Support design and implementation of VESL instruction and career pathways bridge programming
  • Evaluate program efficiency and effectiveness and adapt the program curriculum or design as needed
  • Assure that project outcomes and reporting meet external standards by funders (contractual compliance, deliverables are achieved timely, policies/procedures are implemented, and reports are completed and submitted in a timely manner) as well as internal IRC standards of professional project management, technical competence, and organizational policy
  • Together with the EL manager, develop and implement program goals.
  • Coordinate closely with other IRC staff to ensure seamless delivery of services to clients utilizing a client-centered service model.
  • Report regularly to the EL Manager on activities and results as well as areas of concern.
  • Identify and engage with relevant community partners to support IRC’s education and learning programs.

Leadership and Supervision of the Adult Education Team

  • Manage the adult education team in accordance with IRC’s People Manager Standards. Train and provide leadership to staff in all aspects of program responsibilities.
  • Provide supervision and support to masters-degree and bachelor-level interns
  • Administer adult education case management, ensuring high-quality case management services are provided to clients, including appropriate follow-up, and developing strong connections between the client, IRC, and relevant community agencies.
  • Serve as point person and adult education team representative for collaboration and correspondence with stakeholders, including partner agencies and service providers.
  • Facilitate interdepartmental communication and information sharing for monthly newsletters, program reports, etc.
  • Participate in IRC network-wide initiatives to understand and share best practices relating to adult education, cultural orientation, and continuing education/job training.
  • Work with Community Relations to develop and maintain relationships with community partners for volunteers, interns, classes, and space.

Reporting and Data Collection

  • Manage adult education program database and ensure timely and accurate case notes and database updates, within both the ETO and Client Track (CT).
    • Ensure program participants are properly enrolled, and files are up to date
    • Prepare timely reports on adult education programming to meet donor and contract requirements
    • Ensure data collection systems are always up to date with program information
  • Coordinate with IRC development staff and EL Manager regarding funder reports and new potential donors
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree required; preferably in a related field. Master’s degree in a related field such as Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or TESOL/ESL preferred.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of two years teaching experience (with adults) required, preferably with English language learners
  • Experience working with adult learners from a variety of cultural and linguistic groups highly desired
  • Relevant professional experience working with English Language Learners, refugee and/or immigrant populations strongly preferred
  • Previous multicultural experience and consistent track record of communicating well with a diverse group of backgrounds strongly preferred
  • Experience designing student-centered, thematic-based curriculum and developing monitoring and evaluation systems highly desired

Demonstrated Skills & Competencies

  • Strong leadership and mentorship skills, ability to train and monitor staff, volunteers, and youth mentors.
  • Demonstrated understanding of social emotional asset development (SEAD) and ability to incorporate SEAD learning goals into program frameworks.
  • Strong relationship-building, diplomacy, and networking skills; ability to effectively build internal and external relationships.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to make presentations required.
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written; proficiency in language(s) spoken by IRC’s clients is desired; including Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, and Kiswahili.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving purposes.

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment
  • May require occasional travel to off-site locations.
  • May require occasional weekend and/or evening work.

Compensation: (Pay Range: $70,000) Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
