Brief Description

Job Objective:

Under the overall direction of the Director and/or Manager of Surgical Services or Designee and the direct supervision of the Registered Charge Nurse, the Anesthesia Technician Supervisor accepts and performs a wide variety of duties requiring a high degree of accuracy, provides technical assistance in planning, organizing, and improving the workflow in the unit to maintain the services provided to the Anesthesiologists. The Anesthesia Technician Supervisor facilitates the development of the Anesthesia Technicians.

Supervisor Duties:

  • Assists in orientation and on-the-job training of new personnel
  • Assists in the maintenance of records, reports, and department statistics involving anesthesia.
  • Assists in monitoring anesthesia quality control within the department, such as anesthesia equipment, machines, and supplies
  • Assumes responsibility for specific programs or procedures within the department, including development, implementation, and analysis
  • Assists in development of orientation and on-the-job training program for new personnel
  • Assists with in-service and continuing education within the department
  • Collects relevant metrics to demonstrate improvement in care.
  • Participate in process review of unit leadership and educator

Other Duties:

Check and oversee the Operating room suite readiness

  • Evaluates the education needs of the anesthesia technician
  • Coordinates the patient’s status (age appropriate) and planned surgery, then prepares appropriate circuits and supplies (i.e., pediatrics, thoracotomy cases) for anesthesia before anesthetization of the patient.
  • Assists the anesthesiologist during induction of anesthesia, such as holding the patient, applying a non-invasive monitor when necessary.
  • Stocks supplies, medications, and checks for outdates in both the Anesthesia cart and machine.
  • Changes sharps containers and soda lime when needed
  • Wipes down anesthesia machine, cables, and associated equipment, i.e., blood warmers, I.V. infusion, pumps, etc., between surgery cases.
  • Collects washes and sterilizes laryngoscope blades according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Checks emergency intubation carts, pediatric and adult.
  • Maintains appropriate PAR levels of supplies in the anesthesia storeroom.
  • Prepare the transport monitor, complete with modules and cables necessary.
  • Maintains supplies for the IV set-up area, A-line kits, Hotline kits, and epidural cart.
  • Orders/ exchanges Pharmacy medication carts on a routine basis.
  • Participates with the chief of Anesthesia and the Director of Surgical Services in setting realistic and measurable goals for performance.
  • Utilizes cost containment without compromising the care of the patients.
  • Follows guidelines of OSHA Standard Precautions.
  • Participate in unit-based Performance Improvement activities.
  • Assist in the transport of patients to and from the operating suites.

Non-Essential Duties:

  • Able to perform nursing technicians’ responsibilities.
  • Assist with completing orders for supply items as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of proper instrumentation, supplies, and equipment used for anesthesia induction and monitoring.
  • Knowledge and ability to troubleshoot equipment used by anesthesiologists.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and OR standards
  • Knowledge of proper sterilization and washing of reusable equipment used by anesthesiologists
  • Knowledge of daily quality checks for anesthesia equipment/machines

Abilities

  • Ability to set up and assist an anesthesiologist for the insertion of central lines and A-line placement

  • Ability and willingness to assume responsibility for development, implementation and analysis of a specific departmental program or service, such as:
  • In-service and continuing education program
  • Monitoring ongoing quality assurance measures within the department
  • Anesthesia equipment and instrumentation inventory, testing of equipment, computer training, etc.
  • Department Safety inspections
  • Department Hazardous Chemical Waste Surveillance inspections.

Education and Experience:

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Proficient in the English Language

Experience

  • 3 years of experience as an Anesthesia Technician
  • 3 years of experience in an Acute Care Operating Room environment
  • 3 years of experience working with Anesthesia equipment and machinery
  • 1 year of experience in a progressive leadership role preferred
  • Certification as an Anesthesia Technician preferred

Required Licensure and/or Certifications:

  • BCLS
  • Successful completion of Basic Dysrhythmia Course

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • May be exposed to contaminated instruments that may cause infections, burns, or cuts.
  • Exposure to trace levels of anesthetic agents. Tasks are often performed under conditions of emotional stress.
